Fifty Plus (50+) - Anyone participate in the Senior Games?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

It looks like the NSGA (http://www.nsga.com/) has state chapters all over the US.

I'll probably skip the dominoes and poker, but they have 5 cycling events. I have zero racing experience (unless you count the tractor I outran), and the recumbent division might be pretty thin, but getting a chance to pedal in earnest around the Texas Motor Speedway track sounds mighty tempting. I can just hear myself later saying, in my best bland, casual voice, "Yeah, I've raced it, it's a fairly fast track. You need to stay low in that second turn...".

Hmmm. I'm very tempted to try the 20k race in Virginia Beach. No doubt I'll get my butt handed to me on a platter by some 85-year-old, but so what.

Fortunately for you, the 85 year old would be in a different division (50 to 54, 55 to 59, etc). I'm not sure that's the case, though, with recumbents, so I might actually get "dropped like a used kleenex" by an 85 year old. On the other hand, the top 5 in each division of the Dallas games qualifies for the Texas State Senior Games (http://www.tsga.org/state/), so if there were only 4 entries in the recumbent division, they might feel it necessary to concede a spot to me in the state games. That would make the next comment in my racing career, "Yeah, I went to State last year...".

Just getting to ride around a track like the Texas Motor Speedway sounds like a fun time.

My husband will do the Mt. Laguna hill climb, does it every year. Last year he just missed getting a Bronze by 3 seconds, the year before he got the Bronze and the year before that he got the Gold. Hope the guys who won the Gold and Silver last year don't show up this year!!!

Go for it! I've entered several...they're a lot of fun.

Depending on the venue and your age, you might have some serious competition, or you might find yourself alone in the category (much more likely on a 'bent). Either way, it's a fun way to test yourself against others your age.

Washers? They really have a washer champion? I thought that was only for oil field riff-raff. I'll clean their clock playing washers. Forget the cycling. I've found my calling.

..."and ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce Monoborracho, washer champion of the Known, Civilized World"....:p :p

Have a buddie who is a runner and does the Senior games. It is serious business, from a competitive angle. He says the secret to his success is to outlive the competition.
