Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Has anyone ever done one of these 24 hr. mtb races? A few riding buddies and I are planning on doing one in Snoqualmie Washington later this summer.
Here's the link: 24 hours of adrenaline (http://www.24hoursofadrenaline.com/)
Sounds like a fun time- camp, ride, party....
If anyone has any experience with one of these races, what should I expect? It seems like if you get more than a few people on a team, you really only have to do a lap, hang out for a few hours, then do another lap, etc.....

I did the 24hrs of Winter Park back in 2001.
It ranks right at the top of my adventures. We did a four man team. Of course it totally depends on your team's fitness level - but we finished 21st out of 27 four man teams. We're just a bunch of fat schlebs...and did not do it for competition, just for the thrill and fun of it. It was the 24hr NORBA nationals - so our team was competeting against...Team Rockshox, Team Specialized, Team Subaru Gary Fisher, etc, etc, etc!
Here's the results...look at Team BOMB:

It is a MUST do...the event is VERY well put together. EVERYONE has fun. It's like the Woodstock of Mountain Biking! It was cool running shoulder to shoulder with all the big guns...getting lapped by Tinker Juarez...and having him shout back at you "C'mon dude, keep cranking, almost to the top of the hill!" was VERY cool!
We were cranking off average about 55 minute laps...Tinker's first THREE laps were like 37 minutes! On his OWN! It was nutZ! Our TEAM did 20 laps...he did 27 ON HIS OWN!
I HIGHLY reccomend it to anyone that's ever Mountain Biked - just for the pure fun of the event.
Here's our team (the three of us standing...plus one guy out on a lap...and our support crew kneeling):

It was great fun!!! My husband and I did one here at the Olympic horse park. We had a team of five. Our corporate team came in 5th out of 20 some odd corporate teams. Got to try it!!!

Ya, it really looks like a blast.
BikeColorado, nice pics of your team, looks like you were up against some pretty tough competition.:) I'd love to have Tinker yelling at me to push it!!
Cbhungry, I was actually wondering if you and Sam had gone, because I noticed there was one in Conyers, GA.
All of the venues seem to be at really beautiful places around the country. The closest one to me is in Snoqualmie Washington in September. Looks like less teams participate in this one than most of the other venues, probably because it's a little further away from civilization than most of them. Should be a blast, I know we'll have some good fun...
Anyone else from Oregon or Washington want to join our team? So far there's 3 of us, all experienced cross country riders. We are not planning on being too competitive, just having a really good time. PM me if you are interested~
That definately sounds like great fun. Pitty the nearest place for them, Tucson, is such a miserable chuck of this planet.

I did a couple of 12 hour races. The second, Tinker was in attendance, and he IS one of the gentlemen riders out there. Same thing happened to me, on a long climb, he passed and shouted, "You've got it, keep going!" Pretty cool guy! I didn't mind being passed by him!
I'm seriously thinking of the 24 in Conyers this year. It's in October right? I've got to get my team together and start some serious training!

So are the 12 hour races the same format as the 24 hr? From what I understand the 24 hr. is a lap thing, where a person from your team does a lap, then another person, etc. If this is the case, I figure if you have 4 or 5 guys you do a lap, then just kick it for an hour or two, then do another lap, etc. And everyone there is a mountain biker camping out.... I can't think of anything else I'd rather be doing

Yep, pretty much the same. There is always the issue, "Do I do one lap and rest or two at a time?"
The guy going first will always have the slowest lap time. This is due to the inevitable bottleneck at the entrance of the trail and along the trail until the riders thin out. The race organizers always start LeMans style where you have to run to you your bike en masse. The worse the bottle-neck the longer the run. Usually about 1/4 to 1/2 mile.
My last race, I got together last minute with a hap-hazard team with no intentions of winning, just having fun!
One of my teamates was riding with a broken ankle, the other was a novice (only riding 6 months) on a NON-Novice course. The third and myself were out of shape. The intention was for each of us to do 2 laps, and if there was time a third lap.
I did my two, but no one else had the desire or ability to do their 2nd lap. I started to get ready for my third lap, and decided against it due to weather conditions and lack of interest from other team members. Plus, they were eating Italian sausages and drinking cold St. Paulie Girl's. Heck, with that temptation, there was NO way I was going to punish myself and do another lap.

I've done three now, and this year I have another couple planned. If you do one thing this summer on your bike, make sure it's a 24! Good friends, good times and stories to last a life time!
