Hey all. See below the bike as it was, and how far I've got. So far, I've transferred the cockpit and front wheel from the Viscount across, put on the Bluemels fender, and added a period Brooks. It's looking good!

Tricky things in the offing - still trying to remove a stuck cotter (hence the steel cranks still on, rather than sold). Also the rear (currently still on the Pullman) needs a spoke replacement. May do the rest of the transfer, then take it to the LBS for those things. I've got a TA crankset that I need to look over, I need to transfer (and possibly respray) the chainguard from the Pullman, and see what can be done with the rack - will de-rusting it do, or do I need to spray that black too? I decided to put the centre-pulls from the Dawes back on, but I'm not a million miles from being done.

Todays progress, and some difficulties. I had half an hour to work on the bike this morning, so I hung the rear fender, and transferred the rear wheel and lighting rig. As you'll see below, the lamp bracket totally obstructs the centre-pull, which means that I either need an alternate lamp bracket, or side pulls. My Raleigh 20, however, has a lamp bracket that sits on top of the headset, and I'm thinking that not only might that work well, but it might remove the rather "long necked" look created by the long head tube (61 cm frame) and the tall stem. What do you think?

Sammy,
I was going to suggest a headset mount bracket, or possibly a fork mount clamp on. My Dawes has the fork mount boss for the head light:D

I have a clamp on fork mount on my Raleigh Royal, which I don't, and won't, use. I could transfer that.

If you don't have a long enough steerer to mount the bracket under the headset locknut, you might see if you can use the bolt on the stem that clamps the handlebars down. That might also give you a better angle for that light.

That's an idea. That might work with the bracket I've got here.

Id go with the headset mounted bracket if youve enough space like suggested. Cotters are a pain. Iused a makeshift press before. First whack the cotter from the wedge end, not the threaded end, then turn around and whack at the threaded end (with the nut still on but at the end of its travel. If no go get a suitable sized socket, a G clamp, two mole grips and an extra pair of hands. Place socket over wedge end, place non moving part of G clamp over socket, screw down threaded part of G clamp so that its snug on the threaded part of cotter. Keep nut on cotter to give G clamp more to seat on. Put mole grips on each side of the G clamps wing nuts. Turn, leave, turn, have a cup of tea, spray and soak with plus gas/ wd 40 or GT 85, turn and so on. Eventually the clamp will press out the cotter into the inside of the socket. Beware it goes suddenly. Nice steel cranks, what length and chainring size are they. Are they single or double, cant see.

Another way to remove a stuck cotter is to make the bike rideable and then take it for a ride and do some mashing. That has never failed for me--even when I didn't want the cotter to move.

Wow, what a handsome bike!

It sure looks like a comfortable classic and I think the paint gives it great character!!

Wow, $50? That's a LOT cheaper than I'd have thought. One of those may make it's way to me.

Do you have anything under the bike when you are trying to hammer the pin out? The first time I did not put anything real sturdy under the bike and they wouldnt come free. Then I set the arm on a cinderblock and it came out second try.

Further progress. Fitted a Pletscher rack, and over the weekend, my dad came over with his multimeter, and we proved that the generator hub works fine, and belled the light through - also no problem, and the switch works. Now I need a suitable rear light. I also opted to go with sidepulls, because I really like the light where it is.

i'm a newbie to bikes in general not to riding them but to everything else--what is a 3 speed and how can i build one? are the gears internal? that bike is beautiful--i like simple but i live on a hill so a couple gears would be nice
