Foo - Septic system troubles

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. My 40+ year old septic system is having issues. I have surface water about where the distribution box is. Probably the field has finally plugged up but it might be the box jammed up, so I am going to dig it up and see if it can be accessed and is blocked(The tank was sealed with asphalt and had no access until the asphalt collapesd a few years ago, making for a fun project)
I am also going to get it pumped again, just to give us some extra time.
First off, any ideas what it might be that is repairable?
Secondly has anyone had a tank and field installed recently and how much was it? This should be a simple install with gravity feed. But I don't think they will be willing to use the old tank. It was constructed from cinderblock and has an odd baffle set up. It also still has about half of the old asphalt lid in it.

There for a second, I thought this thread was going to be a mod's rant about A&S!

- sister had a new system (w/tank) installed 10 years ago - it was $6,000... YMMV...
a 40 year old septic system???
I think the average life is less than 20.
My mom had to have hers replaced last year at around 30 years, I think.

Well i would ask a company that can do that and ask for their rates, ask a couple companies if you can.

It might be tree or shrub roots. They are attracted to the water and will plug up your drain field.
