I recently found out I may be attending Wayne State next fall and thought I'd go ahead and start scouting out the situation: anyone up there do much cycle commuting?

I go to wayne state right now, but dont commute to school by bike. I mostly bike at Stony Creek and around that area. I just started riding a few weeks back and am looking for people from this area to ride with and learn and be faster. PM me, Tim

I work right by WSU in the old GM building on Second and W. Grand BLVD. The important question is "from where will you be commuting?"

The new center/wsu and medical areas are decent enough and safe but traffic can be a bit scary and the roads, like John R, suck. But, around here, if you stay on second or third, the traffic isn't too bad.

The real problem is, and I hate to say it because I've worked and lived here for a long time, SAFETY. You better be fast. I've seen roving packs of dogs just of the wayne campus. There are a lot of aeas where buildings have been torn down and vacant lots have been allowed to grow over.

Yep. Detroit, has crappy drivers that do not look out for bikes. It has a lot of crime, but the WSU campus area is just fine. You can ride your bike relatively safely from WSU to downtown, and maybe north to the hamtramck area, but other than that, you'll be taking your life into your own hands. The best (or worst) part is that there are no hills, so you do not need a multi speed bike. The other good part is that the WSU area keeps getting safer every year. I think you can ride from WSU to the ballpark. If you go down woodward, you shouldn't get mugged, but you will pass a lot of homeless folks, prostitutes, and druggies. If you take other roads you may have a problem. I live in Warren, but I've been thinking about moving downtown. It still sucks, but it seems like an area that is undergoing a reincarnation.
