I work 2 day shifts followed by 2 night shifts and then 4 days off. I was wondering if anyone else commuted on a similar type of schedule. I figure I can commute on my night shifts. We are allowed to sleep at night, although being a paramedic, it's definitely not guaranteed. There's only 1 station I would commute to on my nights and I'm only 8 miles away from it so I figure my partner can drop me off at my house if we are really busy and I'm too tired to make the trip back by bike. Just curious if any others are in this situation and how they handle it.

Not in your situation but it sounds like you are definately going to want lights on the bike!!!

I work on rotating shifts , I ride to work on all the shift now but when I first started commuting I just rode on the day shift then the late shift & soon I was hooked & riding on the night shift too :) I do xtra Ks home on all shifts now , in all weather ( exept when we have a cyclone :( ) Was only stupid to try it once & nearly had all the air sucked out of my lungs by the wind on the harbour bridge   I now realy enjoy riding home in the early hours , you get the road to your self , its the best time to ride :)
Rapp5 is right tho , you will need some good lights , Im lucky that all my route's have street lights of some sort so I have a green 5 led flashing light on the front , a red 5 led flashing on the seat post at the rear & a cheap red led light on the belt of my bum bag . I aso put switch them on if its raining or overcast in the day-time.
the other negative can be Friday & Saterday nights when all the larakins are out & about on the roads
Good luck you'l enjoy Vampire commuting:thumbup:

What do you guys think the feasability is of a commute of 8 miles in southern arizona? Catch is I need to do it at 2 am on sat, sun and monday mornings. The distance is of little concern, the drunks on the road are the biggest concern. Input would be greatly appreciated in terms of advice and encouragement. Yes, I have lots of lights!

Your distance does not seem too bad, just make sure you are visible. Riding a bike in the middle of the night with proper reflectors, lights etc. guarantees you a certain amount of respect. When I stop at crossings I have had several positive comments about my equipment.

I've thought about getting a Roloff setup, but I guess that I'll stick to rotating and shifting when commuting.

Oh! Oops...this was about something totally different!

Never mind. :D

Is there an alternate route you can take (even if it is longer) to avoid the drunk drivers?

Will a lot of lights and reflectors catch the attention of drunk drivers? :crash:

I work rotating shifts also. My shifts are 12 and one half hours long... Start time is 6 am to 6 30 pm. I can ony ride first PM shift, because before PM shift starts I sleep much of the day. Commute is 26 miles, so about 2 hours. Couple decent hills. I get used to it.
Schedule is something like.. 2 day shifts, 2 days off. the 3 nite shifts, 3 days off, and 3 day shifts and 3 days off. Every other rotaation it is actually like 3 and one half day off.
Allows me to ride to work about 4 times a month. Overall, I like the compressed time with more days off. To commute 25 miles each day would be too much at 26 miles one way.

Do a trial run for a couple of weeks to see if it works out & make sure you carry a cell phone ! If its too hard on the nerves it may be best to give it a miss . I used to get realy up tight riding at these times of the week at night , now when they lean out of the window & shout ect I just give them a friendly wave & forget them, otherwise you get your self all worked up & stressed out for nothing :crash: Make a habit of temporarily mentaly noting rego. numbers of cars that pass you then if one does something dangerious you can report them on your cell phone:(
