Recumbent - Single speed recumbents?

Hello, I'm new to the recumbent forum, usually I'm in the Fixed gear/SS

I'm wondering if there are any single speed recumbents?

Maybe it's stoopid to built a SS bent? :eek:

Oooh, you could do it but you'd have to be extremely strong. I don't think I could do it with anything other than small hills, and I'm pretty strong upright as well as bent.

You'd probably have to build one yourself...

I've also been thinking about it - I think the best option would be to build something like this:

Since it's so low, you don't have to unclip, you could just put your hand on the ground

I ride a recumbent trike. I once had my rear derailleur seize up on me on one particularily cold morning, so that I was stuck in one gear for my entire commute. It was the perfect gear for cruising on level ground at about 25 km/h. As soon as I hit a hill, OMG my legs were on fire! Unable to stand on the pedals like you can to on a DF bike, it took all my strength to turn those pedals and get up the hill.

So yeah, a single speed 'bent would be a very bad idea, unless you live somewhere with no hills.

I made this one out of 100% junk for my daughter. Ft. Lauderdale is 100% flat. She has a blast with it. Top speed is 14mph.

since I now have 2 bikes, both fixed gear, I was wondering about a fixed o ss 'bent
seems the problem is that since you can' stand on fhe pedals and move the body on the bike it' not a good idea

Sure. It's called a Big Wheel.

This is awesome. I hope when she gets older she appreciates growing up with a dad who can make fun useable things out of "junk".

In all of the things I have been dreaming of making, this looks like one of my dreams...something to horse around with..play in the neighborhood..show off cause it is different..............peace

Don't be surprised if a cult of single speed recumbents crops up in a few years. Not any nuttier than single speed mountain bikes or road bikes, city bikes, etc. (The backup bike to the hybrid that is the backup to my recumbent is a singlespeed hybrid.)

You guys should see the neighbors look when we go by, daughter on that lowrider ss trike and me on my LWB (not ss). The bikes are smile makers. And half the fun is making people smile. It's amazing, on a df we're invisible. On those bikes people actually ask things and talk to you freely. Often saying nice bikes etc..

That is one the nicest pieces of "junk" I've seen. You must have a pretty comprehensive toolbox?

I agree, it's great fun. When I go out on my Bike-E or my Strida, even normally reserved people can't help but smile. Now when I ride the Bike-E & my wife rides the Strida, folk are dumbstruck, they don't know which bike to concentrate on ;-)

If you're a shy type, & you want to overcome that, just get a recumbent or a Strida, & shyness will soon evaporate :-)

I've actually encountered fast going cars screech to a crawl, just so they can take a closer look!

I saw a pic once in RCN of a V-Rex clone that was built as a track bike. It would not be practable for most of us to use on open roads.
