C'mon, speak up! At what level is your team? Gina and I have done 4 centuries on our tandem. That was a few years ago, but I think she's a stronger rider now. Nothing real fast, but usualy do a decent pace. Not very good at climbing on the tandem, or even on our singles!:D
I thought it would be cool to maybe someday have a social forum tandem ride.:)

We have a Bike Friday triple that I ride with my two girls, ages 9 and 8. The boys (4 and 6) join us on a tandem Trail-a-Bike. Our level is lowest. With the kids mounted, the rig weighs about 300 lbs: Before I get on. We accelerate down hills quickly. We need to work on our climbing. :) We'll be riding Cruisin' the Conejo in May. The 21 mile route unless we're feeling frisky, then we'll up it to a massive 35 miles.
My wife is willing to rent a tandem some time soon to try out. I hope she likes that so I can do what I love with whom I love.

You have any buds that have one. Maybe let you ride it along side them? Although I liked riding tandem with Gina, it took some ironing out of the rough stuff to really begin to enjoy the ride. I wouldn't think you could enjoy tandem enough with one or two rides to really decide whether or not it would work for you. IMO anyway.
Sheesh, we had the stop on the side of the road arguments, I'll never ride with you again's, the ride by yourself back's, the punch in the back ribs by the stoker:eek: . She laways seem to win the on the bike boxing match!:D
Even now we find ourselves fighting eachother with the pedals while riding. Not talking conflict, but it takes a lil bit to adjust to the other riders style. If we ride singles more than tandem, it will take a few rides to readjust.
Some good riders won't even dare be a stoker. Don't feel secure without controls. Takes plenty of work to get to that happy point! AND Gina was very relaxed. I've met some riders that I wouldn't dare captain!
But it is worth all the work in the end!

Most of our mutual friends don't exercise, but her only hurdle is that the saddle hurts her @$$. I'm trying to convince her to go commando with her cycling shorts. Since she has no riding style, it won't be a problem, and I know I will be providing all of the pilot's duties plus at least 60% of the engine as well, at least for a while.
I figured we'll start by renting on at the Santa Monica Pier. The view is nice and the pace has to stay moderate to avoid crashing into anyone. I've done it before with someone else and had no problems.

That and the commando makes all the difference in the world. Funny how some can be stubborn when it comes to sadlles and stuff. Gina used a big cushy Velo spandex covered seat for years. I kept pushing the WSD saddles. Finally broke down and tried a Specialized Dolce gel women's saddle. Loved it so she went out and replaced the sadlles on her other bikes too.
Good luck with the tandem ride!:D
we've got a burley duet that i bought on ebay for about half of what it's worth. we had it for over a year now and ride most sundays.
hey urbanknight you can give my tandem a try. i even have and extra rockshox seatpost for different stokers so that i don't mess with my wife's saddle setup. just have and extra saddle that you wife likes and maybe pedals. our bike has speedplays in the front and spds in the rear. when i met you at the sfvbc swap meet, i think you were a little taller but we could make the bike work. send me a pm if you wanna give it a try. my wife went from zero riding at the beginning of last year to doing a mertric century in the summer and we rode the tandem about 1500 miles last year.
I have a GT tandem I used to ride a lot with my previous wife (we had that in common, anyway). Unlike Mr. Beanz, we never had social discord on the bike. I rode (trained) as hard as I liked and she rode as hard, or not, as she liked. I even had her in full sit-on-the-top-tube tucks down mountains in Colorado at 60mph. I guess she also trusted me a bit. My current wife is not going to be riding the bike. I will be selling it this summer, but I'm in no hurry. If anyone would like to try out a tandem for a few weeks, let me know. I don't know the sizes off hand but I'm 6'2" and she was 5"3" and there is a good amount of adjustablility. I tuned it up a month or so ago for some friends to try (~5'6" ans 5'4" or so) so it's in pretty rideable condition. I'm not offering to sell it here, I'm just offering to let anyone try it out who'd like to know if tandeming is for them.
I hate to see it hanging in my garage collecting dust. The only problem with the bike is it uses 700D tires which are almost impossible to find, but the one on it are good for checking it out. What was GT thinking?
My wife and I are seasonal tandemers on a F/S mountain tandem. She does not like cold or heat while riding, but she's super fit; so when we do ride we usually stay out for 4 to 6 hours.
The only century's she's ever done has been on the tandem. I just put some Kenda Flame Cruiser slicks on the bike and hit the roads. Feels like riding a 7' barcalounger coming down the road hills.
Thanks for the offer Will. We'll probably just rent at the pier because she doesn't get into equipment or anything, so for starters we'll want platform pedals and no equipment swaps. If she likes that, we might be looking for something to buy eventually. I'm not holding my breath, though.
Ive been always curious about riding a tandem. Seems very interesting. I never forget few years back, a guy on a tandem ,just one dude with no stocker kicked my ass.
josh, if you're willing you can ride stoker with me on a bf ride or whenever (unless my wife is going)
One thing about riding a tandem is when you spend a weekend riding one and get back on your single bike.....wow!...:D
why'd you change your name? i liked 'the fixer' much better

Thanks Will......I was getting tired of that name and it was starting to sound a bit corny to me after 4 years of use so I asked Jason to make the switch for me. :)

Thanks. I might take you up on it! I want to try it just because.:D

I'm going to ask Jason to change my name to LolaLeatherHips - it has a better ring to it than merider1. :D

how about "thighmaster"?
I ride a blue co-motion periscope with my wife or kid. If you see us, be sure to say hey.
In February we did a social tandem ride in the Pasadena area, and are hoping to set up another one in June or thereabouts, probably closer to the coast. Details will be posted at bikeboom.com. Look for "tandemonium"
