Ok, so I haven't been on my bike in over a year due to knee surgery and other related issues. Getting ready for second knee surgery so I'm still gonna be off for a while. In the mean time, I want to upgrade some components. Specifically, front/rear deraillers and crank. Got an '04 Hardrock. Front Derailler = Shimano Acera. Rear Derailler = Shimano Deore, crankset is Truvativ 5 D. Looking to Shimano XT or SRAM equivalant. Do they make xt for an 8 speed? Thanks for the help guys.

that sucks to hear that you havnt been able to ride in a year, but if you were wanting to upgrade all of that stuff it would just be better to get a new bike that comes with all of thoes items stock.

I had knee surgery (ACL replacement and miniscus trim) late november and picked up a lemond spin bike for my house and started riding every day, 10 days post op as part of my rehab. Every dr or therapist I talked to said that a bike is the BEST rehab you can do for knee surgery and the reason I dropped $1300 on something I knew sooner or later would become a place to hang clothes.
I just pulled the mountain bike out 2 weeks ago and started riding around on the streets and easy trails until I am confident in the knee for more technical trails or ones where I need to stand up and pedal.
Why a year down?

Why a year down?
Man, where do I begin. Well, since the injury was work related, I had to go through the motions with them. My left knee diagnosis was a meniscal tear and patella tendon strain/slight tear. On top of that it was determined that my knee cap isn't tracking well. After therapy, cortisone injections, light duty, endless doctors appointments, knee braces, etc., the decision was made to finally schedule surgery. Welcome to the world of workers comp. Now, I'm waiting for a right knee arthroscopy. Went for a ride on a paved trail near home (switched to slicks), and have no pain...until I stand on the pedals or push a moderate to heavy gear. So, yeah, last year was a throw-away. Sucks.

Did you consider a fluid trainer?
yes but I couldnt afford to fall off an unstable bike mounted to a trainer trying to get on it.

They make wheel blocks for that reason.
