Mountain Biking - MTB shorts - underwear or not?

Kind of an awkward question, but I know that people around here love awkward questions, so no worries! :rolleyes:

So yeah, I got my first pair of mtb shorts the other day. Fox Base shorts, so there is an inner chamois. (Just wanted to clarify, because I've seen shorts that for some reason didn't have an inner chamois.) I know how to wear the roadie lycra shorts, but I was wondering, am I supposed to go commando under the mtb shorts too? Or does it work differently?

Back to the point. It would be a little bit rude to call any of my buddies at 1:23am and ask if they wear anything under their shorts, so I'm asking the forums. Like I said, I'm pretty new to MTB, so I really and truly don't know. They feel totally different from my lycra shorts, so I'm not sure if the protocols are the same or if they are also different. Can anybody lend me some (preferrably real) advice?

I guess I could be mistaken, but I don't remember saying that you were not qualified to comment about my mundane helmetcam/video matters because I knew so much. Not that it should matter anymore; some people can actually get over trivial things like that. That was a while back, and I don't remember what I did and did not say, so I'm sorry if I did.



Thank you to the people who actually gave me answers, and you know who you are, but I think people around here might want to think about learning how to be gentle to newbies instead of belittling. It doesn't do much good for the sport when people who want to get involved are exposed to that stuff early on. As much as MTB'ers may not want to hear it, I was enjoying myself much more on the roadies forum -- elitist as they may seem to some, they were at least polite to other roadies.

as a general rule...if it has a chamois crotch liner than you don't wear underwear. it probably wouldn't hurt to wear a boxer brief type underwear if you wanted.

you are a roadie. you know all this. i just got into road biking. my full length bib pants have no chamois so i bought some bike specific chamois underwear to go underneath. my bib shorts have a liner so i don't use anything else.

same with the mtb stuff. however, if you feel the new shorts do not offer the support you require, it would be okay to wear something underneath. but i would use something thin, not another chamois biking underwear product. too much chamois no good.

for future reference, you might opt to buy regular "street" shorts and use the above mentioned biking specific underwear. this could possibly be cheaper in some instances
