1st gear chain ring (smallest ring) is full of guk, mud and probably chain lube, i cannot wash it out or clean it because the water doesnt make it move, only a rag. the only way to clean it is to clean it with a rag while the chain ring is removed from the bicycle. should this be cleaned, or left alone? (isn't causing trouble at the moment) thanks for the help.

check it out...below is a pic of some summet i rode to very far away from where i expected to ride, extremely fun and challenging ride somewhere in CT near Bolton. im suprised i found my way back to my car i thought id have to sleep under the stars for the night!

i'd clean it. it'll eventually just cause more wear and tear.

I use a toothbrush to get down there and clean it as much as possible. I've never had to remove the chain ring to clean it.

Take off the chain ring and clean it off. It isn't hard to do anyway.

use some simple green or degreaser and rub away to some good music.
