Classic & Vintage - A Hummer killed my rim!

I was on a long ride today and was at a stretch where I was forced to ride over storm drains amongst traffic. Luckily, the drain patterns allowed me to easily ride over them without issue. That is - before a Hummer forced me to ride too close to an edge, which competely ate up my back wheel!

As soon as I heard the hissing, I knew my rim was done. It had been cracked completely! I'm surprised it didn't shatter. Now, I ride an old bike which uses 700c tubeless (I believe) wheels. Does anyone have any recommendations on a replacement? I don't have a rear brake on this puppy, so my options are wide open as long as they're 700c.

Mainly 27 and some 26, but there is one 700.
It's a touring/tandem rim (http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=&subcategory=&brand=&sku=19394&storetype=&estoreid=&pagename=Show%20All%20Products), which just means it's tougher than average rim, so next time it may not break.

Our customer service rep. bought an H3. She was complaining about the payments and I said "You can give me the Hummer if you want". Of course all the girls in the office broke out in laughter and my face turned beat red.

It's only fair, afterall...heck, I'll do some retribution in your name here on the West Coast: we got loads of Hummers, we can afford to lose a few.:D

Wow, that would be awesome (nice bikes, by the way). Unfortunately, the rim color is the same color as the frame, so I think finding something similar to it will be impossible.

I'm thinking about just getting a black rim with a new all-black tire, to begin the "gentrification" process while I continue riding it. My ultimate goal is to turn it into a high-performance road bike, while maintaining most of the original components.

Here are some pictures. I really don't know what I'm talking about when it comes to wheels, so what exactly am I looking at here, as far as a replacement goes? I'm open to replacing the entire wheel as well. (Note the message on the tire: Mount only on hooked type rims(???)).

That rim is a clincher not a sew-up or at least you've got a clincher tire on there somehow. :)

The grey finish of that Araya is pretty similar to the grey of most other rim makers e.g. Mavic, so you can color match pretty easily.

So if I wanted to get a whole new wheel, what do they do with the rear hub? Can they take the one off the current wheel and just replace everything else?

Yes, you can buy a new rim, and just lace it up with all the old stuff, assuming all the spokes are in good condition, but you can just replace the ones in bad condition.

I went to the nearest bike store. They had many wheel options for me IF I had a 7+ speed cassette. Unfortunately, I have a 6 speed freewheel! There was only 1 700c option available in the entire catalog they had! Anyway, I ordered a new wheel with a new 6 speed freewheel.

Wait a second.. I think the only reason I'm getting a new freewheel is because the person couldn't take it off with a hub remover! Argh.

Anyway, it's new stuff and it's only 80 bucks for everything, so no biggie :)

$80! WOW! Last week I gave my LBS a set of new rims and old hubs to lace for my '62 Continental.
The price of spokes alone will be $72 (custom cut). Add labor, a freewheel and price of the rims to mine,
and you can see what a deal you received. But they couldn't get your FW off? That sound's fishy.

Or some CR18's for $9.95 ( and I paid 19.99 last week, drats)

You can lace it up yourself, just buy a new cheap rim online and go at it.

It'll cost you $15.74 shipped, remove the old rim, replace with the new one, have the shop true the rim (should only be about $10) if you don't have a stand.
