So I was trying to chart the ride my uncle took me on last November on routeslip.com but it had an error when saving and I don't feel like spending another 1.5 hours plotting it again, but I watched the elevation gain add up to over 8000' before it ended. Does that sound right for the following route.
Start/end at PCH and Topanga
Up latigo Cyn
Down Mulholland (Rock Store)
Up Piuma
Down la Tuna
51 miles, 8200' of climbing

Climbed Latigo 2 weeks ago with some friends, same route across Mulholland, to Stunt, up Stunt, then up and down Piuma to Las Virgenes and back to the coast. Our total elevation gain was approx. 5500'. While you started Piuma a little lower, I don't think it was 2500' lower. My guess would be about 6000' of climbing.

Thanks, that makes sense. There was very little climbing on La Tuna or Cold Creek, so it's probably about the same as your route.
