I was thinking of "Hey, Joel, will you bring that cute, firm, spandex-covered behind of yours and plant it in front of me for those little itty bitty 200 miles in Eastern Sierra?" (bat, bat, bat - that would be my eyelashes), and if that doesn't work "Hey, Joel, if you don't ride Eastern Sierra, I'll be 200 miles closer to you on Bike Journals..." :p ;) :D

"and headed out to climb Drum Canyon. Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. What sadistic freak puts that at mile 175 of a double century? "
Brandy, just wait till you've done 98 miles and 11,000+feet of the Mulholland Challenge and start climbing Stunt Road. You will be cussing out Planet Ultra for sure. Then you still have two more climbs up Piuma and Cold Cyn. Very sadistic!
Be careful on the descents especially Deer Creek.
I'll see you there.

Beleave everything they say about Deer Creek. Last year was the first time I ever went down it, Mulholland Double. I'm a larger rider, 225#, and trying to keep the speed down was a problem. I would almost come to a complete stop, let go of the brakes, count to three and be going 30 mph. A couple of the corners look like them just hang over PCH, no shoulder. Have fun!

Oh Jon, I'm going to be cussing out Planet Ultra on Decker, which we drove up on our drive home on Sunday. Ouch.
Oh ya, I forgot about Decker that is a b!tch, just put it in first gear and take it easy on Decker. They have a rest stop 3/4 of the way up and I saw people literally shaking from exhaustion. Advice, make that stop extra short as you still have to climb out of there.

OMG!!!! I did Deer Creek for the first time last Saturday.
I totally FREAKED out, but then again I made the mistake of looking down towards the coast, and I totally lost it. I Stopped my bike and I seriously did not want to continue!
But I did proceed and there was just one more sharp corner, then I stopped AGAIN, and then it was done!
Certainly not my favorite descent! Tony promised me he would stay with me on the MC at least until I get down Deer Creek, thank goodness for that!
Looking forward to seeing you there Brandy!

I think 195 with 8,800 ft of climbing - according to one garmin. But those can be wrong, so ????
I got 192.1 and 7201 feet of gain (Polar 625x)

I got 192.1 and 7201 feet of gain (Polar 625x)
The 195 had a couple wrong turns and backtracking, as well as the ride to and from the hotels we were staying at.
I got 192.1 and 7201 feet of gain (Polar 625x)
I got 192.4 and 7,300' of ascent with a polar S725X.
I got 192.1 and 7201 feet of gain (Polar 625x)
That's about what I got on my Garmin as well, according to the barometric altimeter. However when it uploads to Training Center or MotionBased, it uses the GPS altitude data which reported at a higher number. The elevation numbers for all the people who uploaded to motionbased are anywhere from 8k to 11k.

Wow! It amazes me how these Garmins give such different and conflicing readings on elevation gain. I've seen that on other rides as well where one person's says more elevation than another's. I just want an estimate to gauge how I'm doing. As for the 195 miles, yes, we took a couple of detours (along with other riders in the dark) and added our miles over from the hotel since we rode to and from for a total that day. It was 195.something as I recall. Still not 200 - not that I'm complaining. :D

Motionbased users either use the data from the Garmin, which is a combo of barometric and gps data if they have the 305, or the MB gravity service which determines elevation based on positional data. Mine is set to use the barometric/gps data, but each MB user can select which one to use. However, both MB and TC do a certain amount of smoothing of the data, which induces variation. The garmin 305s also recalibrate themselves using the gps data to account for changes in pressure, which we did see in Solvang.
From my Garmin, the high points on my route were Foxen at elevation 1559 and Drum at 1382, which upon reviewing the topographic data is reasonably accurate.

The moon out on Drum Canyon - this picture does not do justice to the beauty there:
http://i124.photobucket.com/albums/p27/merider/Solvang%20Double/pic37.jpg
I think I was riding with you guys portions of the double. We were all taking a breather at the top of Drum Canyon ... I was the one who stopped about 500 feet from the top, and someone telling me "you're almost there" ... that's what I kept saying to myself. Wishful thinking ...
Then, on our way down, I heard someone say they wanted to stop and take a picture of the moon!
The downhill was rough, but not as bad as I thought it was going to be. There was one stretch at Palm Springs Century which was much worse.

I was the one who yelled almost there, and as much as I'd like to say I was encouraging you, I was really saying that aloud for my own benefit! :p ;) I, too, stopped for a moment on Drum and took some sips of Mountain Dew and it was brutal clipping back in and taking off once more to get to the top. It hurt going up, but it was so gorgeous coming down off of it with that moon out like it was.
Congratulations again on your ride, Spingineer. :)

You know, I'm sure the day is going to come when I'm going to DNF on a double due to some reason or the other. I thought that could happen last Saturday since I wasn't feeling well. Either way, the "attempt" is often forgotten once I've finished the ride. So, I think you should pat yourself on the back first for just being out there, and then for finishing. :)
Yeah, you're right. And I am proud that I did finish.
Congratulations to everyone that finished, none of these double are easy. I’ve DNF in the past, it was tough thing to do. Looking back on it, it was the right decision at the time. My hats off to the slower ride who struggle all day to finish, I’ve been back there, you should be very proud of your accomplishments. You had the tenacity to stick with it and persevere. Anyone who DNF’ed, at least you tried and maybe there was a learning curve there and next time you’ll come back and finish.

See, now when I hear from a rider like you (who has ridden many doubles and a triple) and from my friend, Francis, I realize I should just chill out and stop taking it all so seriously (and worrying about whether or not I'll finish). It takes a certain type of rider (someone who likes to suffer, maybe?) to even want to do these miles. I've DNF'd on less than 100! (recently, and dragged poor Joel with me) So, I'm happy to try and then finish - which is the goal, but not the only goal. I admire the riders who do the great times, though, I will admit and respect those who finished with impressive results. I wish to someday improve my time for sure, but I hope I never lose sight that these are just rides for my own sense of accomplishment and enjoyment (even through the nausea, fatigue, etc.). Again, it was really nice to meet you last Saturday, Dante. :)

Actually, it was my second. But it was my first in 8 years. Part of it was peer pressure though. One of my best friends is Lynn, the ultimate ADO hall of famers. In fact, I used to ride with Lynn, Clem, John way back when. I was actually able to ride with them back then.
So it was with great pride, when I reached the lunch stop, and yelled out to Lynn (who was working the lunch stop), I made it!

I couldn't agree more. I got an email from one rider, who started about the same time I did (around 5 am). He missed a turn, and was following whoever was in front of him, not realizing they missed the turn. He didn't finished till 10:50 PM!!! And here I was worrying about if I could actually finish it. I commend him for keeping at it, and not quitting. I didn't feel good the first 100, and I was so close to DNF'ing it. But the pride in me took over, and decided to gut it out.

No, I didn't, but I can see why. He was so nice to talk to and so encouraging at Butterfield when I was climbing in head winds! That is where and when I met him. His daughter, Renee, was out at Solvang riding with a friend as well. I can see her and Deb climbing together, as well as Renee's friend. Those ladies were all smiles on Saturday and it seemed they were just out for a ride (whereas I was covered with zinc and wilting). As far as your harem goes, I wish I could stay up with any of them, let alone Deb. I've got to get back to climbing. As soon as Hemet is done, I plan to go up Crystal Lake.
