Fifty Plus (50+) - Rider Weight Limits for Wheels

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

For those who may have gained weight like I did after hitting Hawaii 5-0 (Book em' Dano), I found a website that makes reference to rider weight limits for different wheels.
Some of the wheels have no rider weight limits, which is pretty interesting.

You should post this in the clydesdale forum, wheels are a big issue there. I'm surprised how many of those wheels don't have a weight limit.

Interesting data, but a pity that most of the wheelsets tested are top end and few for us mortals.
My psychic powers see broken spoke posts coming to the Clydesdale Forum.

Grant Petersen has some recommendations on this at the Rivendell site, www.rivbike.com. I don't have time right now to post the exact link, but it's not hard to find. Generally he says everybody over about 175 should be on 36 spokes, I think. It's worked for me.

I ride 32' hole on my mountain bikes and 32/28 on my road bike. I have next to no problems with the exception I used to wear out the mountain rims from braking wear on the sidewalls over time. I have tacoed a few, but it was always from some stupid rider error or impromptu collision with a tree or rock. Spoke breakage has been negligible also. And I do not ride stupid high end wheels. Matter of fact, I tend to not trust many of the newer high end wheels. I like a good handbuilt wheel from my local bike shop.

No weight limit just means that no one has filed a suit over a wheel failure for that model and the lawyers have not set a weight limit. I do however love the 10.9 pound Parlee bike on the site, thanks for the link.
