My buddy just bought an old Raleigh Grand Prix that he's converting to a fixie. From what we can tell, it's early to mid '70s, but we're trying to identify the exact year. The serial number is GL422100.
Does anyone know of a resource for checking serial numbers or just flat out know what year that would be?
Thanks

Try this forum (http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=181) instead maybe. These guys tend to know stuff about things.
My dad often waxes nostalgic about his old grand prix...
That's all. Sorry for being off topic.

If it's the original, I think the spindle in the bottom bracket has the date stamped on it.

As the letter "G" is the first character, it's probably an early 70's vintage frame, quite possibly a '73. Source: Sheldon Brown's pages about Raleighs (http://retroraleighs.com/dating.html)
Your friend has made a fine choice for a fixie conversion. The Early 70's Raleigh Grand Prix models were some of the hottest bikes during the '70s bike boom. (yes folks, I was indeed there, sorry) A lot of these were sold, and some days, it seemed that the bike racks at places such as Boston University were just filled with Grand Prix's.
And then there were the Raleigh Lenton's.... (http://sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/lenton-kohler.html) Nice!
