is it just me or should we have our own thoroughfares?
I was riding Crain HWY/Route 301 to Bowie Town Center in Bowie and I almost choked to death.
Is smog an issue all of you deal with? Do they have little oxygen masks we can buy?

In the first interview of the documentary film "Return of the Scorcher" by Ted White, two Hollywood cyclists are shown wearing breathing masks. So I guess they do exist. It's a great film by the way. It's all about bicycles and culture in all different parts of the world.
Automobile exhaust, tire dust, photochemical smog, etc. is a huge concern to many of us. Fortunately, in California, automotive emission controls are one of the greatest technological success stories of the last part of the 20th Century. Now if we could only get similarly stringent controls applied to diesels and 2-stroke gas engines. (Regulations are coming, but only very slowly, due to lobbying by Briggs & Stratton, et al.)

Man all these companies complain about their profits getting cut. But since WHEN in capitalism was it the government or anyone else's job to maintain your profits? That takes the risk out of business.

......when capitalists discovered they could 'lobby' politicians and throw money, gifts, and assorted graft their way.

Or when politicians discovered how much taxes companies pay.....and how much taxes the employees of those companies pay......it's all local....

If government is cutting into business profits, then it's not capitalism.

When I was in Hanoi, where the traffic is all motorbikes and pedal bikes, i.e. no climate control, everyone wore a facemask.
I remember reading a short piece in a cycling book about whether the negative health impact of breathing in all that smog while biking offsets the positive exercise health impact. On the other hand, the analysis here http://opim.wharton.upenn.edu/~ulrich/documents/ulrich-cycling-enviro-jul06.pdf seems not to credit the negative health impacts.

where do I get these masks from is what I want to know. My nostrils were burning...for the most part I'll just try and stay off the busy roads though
these look pretty cool but I cant understand the pricing.

They were most likely wearing the cheap fiber ones you can buy at most hardware stores.

Yes, you can buy oxygen masks, and powered air filter devices. Better to move. I lived in Denver and So Cal when there were days too foul to ride. Now, the only bad days where I am are during the grape harvest when this county stinks of wine and yeast.
