Whats up, i'm new here. I'm a former bmx bike guy who's now into cars, but i'm lookin to sell off a few parts and buy a new bmx bike since i miss riding.. i was wondering if there's a company that makes carbon fiber bikes? or frames? I searched on google and all i found were 'road bikes' in CF, but no BMX bikes. Do such bikes exist?

If there is little reason to save weight in BMX style riding why would someone bother to fabricate a frame in carbon fiber?
Just a thought...

flatlinebmx

maybe its just me but what you just said went right over my head :\
the only explanation for a lack of cf bmx frame is because its too much money to make one that would be worth someones time...for racing would be the only use i could see one but most still ride the cromoly or aluminum frames because i think its easier to ride soemthing that has some weight so its more stable. thats my 2 cents

Roy Mitchell

carbon fiber frame would break. its as simple as that. also it would cost an arm and a leg. besides, you could just buy a really nice stricker or similar light frame weighing in at just over 5 pounds, and they are strong as hell

TravisJPed

LOL! yea that would be horendous you just start landing your record breaking 20 ft jump and you so pumped from the 360 you just pulled off.

Then comes time for the landing.

CRRRAACKKK!!!

anyways its a good iea if ur rich and just liesurely liek to cruise along roads with no serious frame pounding manuevers.

Man a carbon fiber biek would be FAST!!!!!

dixsin142hs

if they made cf bikes wich they dont, they would be wasting money.

MichaelW

You could make a carbon bike strong enough to do BMXing, and it wouldnt be that heavy, but the material is soft and scratches easily. A deep scratch is like "please tear long the dotted line", and will be the focus for a stress fracture. If you are slamming your bike against concrete ramps or wiping out on a rough surface, you want the toughest material out there, which is either steel or titanium.

OneTinSloth

actually, GT, mongoose and supercross made CF bikes in the mid 1990's, good luck finding any info on them though. i remember when BMX plus! tested the supercross frame it broke because it wasn't full CF. they used CF tubes bonded to steel "lugs" like on a giant cadex carbon frame. anyway, it didn't really technically break, it just kind of, pulled apart in mid-air because they decided to use some stupid bolts that pierced the CF, and also there was residue on the steel part that was inserted into the CF part.

the mongoose frame was an injection molded one that actually did fairly well in races and such, i forget who their top pro was at the time, brian somebody (not foster). it was a pretty good frame. it was called the stealth.

the GT carbon fiber was a CF/aluminum frame. the front triangle was injection molded CF and was bonded to an aluminum rear triangle. the chainstay/bottom bracket joint looked like old auburns. i think some guy they used to call the lumberjack, i think his first name was either gary or greg, rode it in races and stuff. it held up pretty well too.

anyway, i remember seeing the supercross frames (after they refined them) at a local shop and kinda laughing about how they just fell apart. and i'm pretty sure the mongoose made it into production too. it sold for around $500.

i can't find anything about CF BMX frames either, just a brief blurb here or there about the stealth on google.

i think everyone stopped making them because they cost too much, not because they broke.

in case anyone ever doubted the existence of a carbon fiber GT frame, here is an auction on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3617675084&category=22677

If you search Mongoose's site, they explained that the entire industry pretty much moved forward to titanium rather than sticking with carbon fiber.

i remember reading in mountain biking magazine, or mountain bike magazine or one of those that there was a guy out in california that made his own CF mtb frames(this was like 3 years ago though). It wasn't a cover story but it was a good 2-3 page article on the guy. CF is actually a really strong material if the weave isnt broken but thats not very practicle for a bike frame so companies have moved onto titanium.

cp23mj

Ricky,Have you had any luck with your hunt? Huffy also made a CF Frame called the Catalyst.

TampaBmxer

Talk about having some breakage, thats all you will have from a carbon fiber frame.

freerider420

dude that would be one \pimp bike for cruisin but thats about all you would be doing

mongoose mike

hey man i got a mongoose carbon fiber sL bmx bike race ready mint

RICKY I GOT A CARBON FIBER BMX BIKE

haro_rider09

mongoose huh?
what kind of bike you got?
like what model

PGZX3

I wonder if those guys realize that carbon fiber is stronger than steel and stiffer than aluminum. However Titanium is lighter than Aluminum and flexes like steel, so it has the best of both worlds!!

The GT carbon frame was DAMN nice, I've ridden a few, and its like every other GT race bike, tight in the corners and solid coming out, just how a race frame should be. The one Huffy CF I rode was nice but I was scared I was going to break it, not because it was a weak frame, but because I had recently broken my GT pro series!!

Mr.Noobie

why would you bump a topic older than my grandma?

jrt1990

man u must be young

Mr. Smashy

That Brian Somebody was more than likely Brian Lopes he raced for Mongoose back in his bmx days.

PGZX3

thats the one, Brian Lopes

JMC

a cf bike? what u use it4? any big jumps and SNAP! surely?

I just think it's ironic that once he leaves and swears off the unhelpful bikeforums, you guys start posting. ;)

PGZX3

of course, you might remember me ;) how's the new car doing ya? Its an accent GT, right? We bought a Santa Fe around february and have loved it!!!
besides, what are you doing lurking around the bmx forum?!?! :P

he means the first 3 posts, probably overlooked by all the posters of this thread

hey there is a carbon fiber race bike made by avent its called morpheus its new on the line

MCSfactory4

there are two frames with carbon fiber downtubes, toptubes and rear tri's. One is the Avent Morpheus which goes for about 500 and the other is FMF which just came out

MCSfactory4

yeah www.bombshellparts.com has the avent morpheus frame

Xtremedoritoes

I highly doubt it. I work at a bike shop and have heard nothing about a Carbon Fiber BMX bike. The main reason would be because of its lack of strength. its light as hell but incredibly weak, for example there are CF wheels that if you ever run a flat on them, they would crack on you right away. And if there ever where a CF frame, it would be incredibly expensive. Just settle for aluminum if anything.

edmej123

whats the point of this post?

MCSfactory4

Xtremedoritoes you obviously arent too much into the bmx racing scene because there have been the morpheus cf bike all season

Mr.Noobie

why do you type like that?

its annonying to look at

CMcMahon

That really is annoying to look at, and hard to read.

CMcMahon

I'm in college, jackass, and if I typed an essay like that it would fail.

Maybe you should go back to school.

haro_rider09

not everyone types like that
people type like they wanna type,
dont critize anyones typing

thank god someone here is old enough to remember the carbon frames. the huffy catalyst and mongoose's was actually the same frame made by the same company. avent has an aluminum lugged, and there are road companies that will make ANY frame you want out of carbon. carbon is better than aluminum will ever be. steel is real and ti is fly. there are carbon road frames that weigh less than bmx's and are stronger believe it or not! i've ridden all the carbon bike in the past except the new avent ones. they were ok considering that carbon was new to every type of cycling. carbon is still very new, there are companies that have made cf frames for 20 yrs.+ and some that just now got the tech. down(raleigh). they once made bmx bikes, they could easily do so again. carbon epoxy is way better now than what they were using even five years ago. old frames cracked because they had voids in them(air bubbles). in fact most frames are subject to this because of less than adequate pressure forming. they expand air bladders inside and around the outside of frame to squeeze air out. using lugs is old school. avent must get cheaply sourced carbon tubes. giant makes their own carbon and uses continuous strands(best). there is room for carbon to return to bmx. nudge nudge clear a path! do a "huffy catalyst bmx" search. you'll find it. it's as real as my hutch trickstar baby!

bmxnate

I ride a Morpheus, and it is a blast to ride. I will probably never go back. I don't care what you guys say about carbon being weak, because you are getting your info from totally unreliable sources. There are so many stupid rumors going around about carbon. I really wish that I could find who started this mess... CARBON ROCKS!!!

CMcMahon

Have you ever tried to hit a 20-foot gap on your carbon fiber ride and ate it? Have you ever seen what happened when Neal Wood tested the carbon Supercross frame out at the trails? If you think that a carbon frame would last even ten minutes on street, or at some real trails, or at a skatepark, then you are severely mistaken. You can do all the gate snaps and manuals through whoops and rollers you want to do, but that sh1t will not last when ridden hard.

bmxnate

Is the Morpheus a street bike? I didn't think so.

CMcMahon

The fact of the matter is that it is weak in comparison with 4130 chromoly.

bmxnate

Actually, the contrary is true. Carbon fiber is actually stronger than 4130, 6061, 7005, 6al-4v... you name it. I really wish that I could find a video online to show you guys what goes on in the Trek factory. The stuff that they do with carbon is unbelievable. I will keep searching.

CMcMahon

Once again. If carbon fiber is so much stronger than 4130, why won't it hold up to a street session then? Actually. No. I won't even go there. Why won't it hold up to a hard bail at the trails?

bmxnate

It will hold up on a hard bail at the trails. The only reason it won't hold up on a street session, and this is my only qualm with carbon, is that as soon as you chunk it, it is toast. Carbon's biggest enemy is sharp objects.

BMXTRIX

Nate - Carbon is not strong in all directions - it is very specifically strong in specific directions. This is the underlying problem with using it as a frame production material in the bmx industry. BMX frames get the crap beaten out of them. BMX racers being about the only group who tend to put more specific directional force on a frame, but even they want bikes that will survive a pile up around turn one of a race, which cf does not provide.

CF is a non-collision, directional-specific, excellent product. But bmx is a non-directional, highly colliding sport... You see, it's not an arguement about whether it is strong or not. It simply is not the right material for bmx. Same as aluminum (in general) or titanium. It costs to much and offers weight savings at a heavy price in durability. Can it work? Yes. Will it survive? Not for any pros for long, and kids will not dish the $$$ for it.

CMcMahon

The only reason it won't hold up on a street session, and this is my only qualm with carbon, is that as soon as you chunk it, it is toast.

I've been bashing the hell out of my frame for months now and I haven't even dented it, but yet you're saying that the material that your frame is made of is stronger... but yet if I bashed it on something "it is toast". That sounds a bit oxymoronic, in my opinion.
