Polished these PISTAs for a customer, and noticed an insignia after the date stamp.

It means the crank is from 1983.

Flower Child crank? 83's a little late for that, though :)

There is no secret to polishing.

You need:
Bencher grinder
Polishing wheels(2)
Polishing compound (2)
patience x 100

optional extras:
Googles
Apron
Gloves

The above will probably set you back AUD$400 depending on the quality of bench grinder

Set-up somewhere that you are prepared to get covered in black grime.

Maybe I'll do a DIY on polishing next time.

The crank begins with an anodised finish - so you need enough heat to remove that, then you are polishing the raw aluminium.

I've had a set of superbe pro's polished which I work on which still look pretty sharp and I've not polished them since.

A tickle with autosol usually brings them back up to standard.

Do you really think I'd spend 2 hours polishing a crankset for it look rubbish after 2 weeks? Well - I wouldn't ;)

Oh... I didn't see the little insignia after the date stamp before... that's because it is a vortex in the time-space continuum!
