My Head Coach is taking a cross country bike trip starting May 6th in San Diego, and ending in New Hampshire on June 2nd. He turned 50 in October, and I'm helping him finalize his route. Does anyone have any input on the best way across Southern California from San Diego to the Flagstaff Arizona area? Any and all input/advice would be appreciated.

Heard trains are good for that distance.

From looking at Adventuring Cycling's website, it would appear that there is part of the Southern Tier route that would get you across the desert safely:

Evidently, this organization that promotes crosscountry cycling has not yet discovered a 'safe' way to get across that would be direct from SD to Flagstaff. However, I have heard of cyclists taking I-10 to Phoenix so that may be a way to do it. Pretty bleak, windy, dusty route, though.
