Good Day All
2 seasons ago I bought a GT Palomar with front suspension. It has proved to be an ok bike but rusts like crazy - like I mean most parts that aren't painted! I spent days lubricating and banging the seatpost around so I could move that up and down - talk about frustrating! Finally got it loose.
I do squirt lubricant internally into it - I have never had to do that to a bike before - and this still happens. Is the Palomar simply a bike built for ******* who don't go out on rainy days?

Also it came with a Shimano 155 Derailer. It hasn't been shifting well so I brought it in for a tune up and the guy said he would work on it but it is a low end derailer and I shouldn't expect too much.
He turned out to be right. It held the gears right for a couple of weeks then is adjusting roughly again.
Is it a low end Derailer?

I am still more impressed with my 20 year old Norco Bigfoot than I am with this bike.

RSVP and thanks for your help ;

GT dont make crappy bikes, even their low-end ones are quite rideable.
A stuck seatpost is normal if you dont do maintainance, you need to keep the seatpost coated with a very light film of grease inside the seat-tube.
You can prevent rust forming on the frame by cleaning thouroughly, then applying a few coats of car wax.
There is special wax to treat the inside of the tubes, but I squirt WD-40 inside the tubes using waterbottle holes, and small pinholes at the ends of rear stay.

But mommy my bike is a piece of crap, the chain is all rusted!!

THEN WHY DID YOU LEAVE IT IN THE SNOWBANK ALL WINTER???

Lesson....you didnt take care of your bike and now your mad at it? Why?
The derailleur is probably low end, but the mechanic should have got it to work.....you should see some of the junk that comes into the shop I work at.

Honest to heavens guys I've kept it lubricated inside and out. I will have to nurse it more than I have been I guess. Also maybe I should start towelling it off everytime I have it out in wet weather - Its just that I've never had to treat a bike so special before - hell I'm 42 years old. The frame stays in good shape - and I do like the triple triangle frame design. The main problem is are the shiny nuts and bolts of the bike that keep rusting . Anyway thanks for the feedback - the Mommy comments made me laugh and yes maybe I did come off as a whiner - it is a good performing and light bike. Bikingchef
