The druggest tells me its illegal for me to use a bike to come to the drive through.

Hey, it's self interest. If people ride their bikes, there would be WAY less need for perscription drugs. Try pulling in to the drivethru in a Rascal motorized Scooter. I think you'd be golden then. :D

Sadly, of all the reasons speculated upon in this thread, your's makes the most sense.

hahah, funny thread.

I'd say ride it up to the window from the very first time if you want service. I've only rode the bicycle through my (large branch) bank drive-thru. I just roll right up and send my stuff in the tube and they may look really suprised, but they never vocally acknowledge that I am different. I ride my MC through that drive-thru and taco-bell's some sat. nights as well without a hitch. Both attract a lot of attention from everyone though.

I would ask the Manager about it before getting huffy and saying "I am leaving". No go? Then write to Headquarters. Still no go? Then move on, write a letter to the local paper, and let the local bike clubs know.

- tell the druggist to pound sand and that you'll be switching pharmacies after writing a letter to your local paper, along with the corporate food chain...

Good stuff! I would also tack on ..... "I will of course have to mention your name in my letter to both your corporate headquarters, and the local newspaper. Have a nice day." :)

In Columbus, businesses often need zoning variances to put in drive thrus. One way to put pressure on is to go to your community meetings and demand that they agree to allow bikes in return for any variance.

Ooh, now that's got potential. Good one! :)

There is NO statute that deals with riding a bike through a drive through in Florida. In fact, the Walgreens is private property and vehicle codes and driving laws apply to public roads only. However, since it is private property then Walgreens can make any rules they want.
Personally, I love going inside my local Walgreens because one of the check out girls is smoking hot. Unfortunately I noticed last month she was pregnant :(

I suppose that a partially paralized disabled American Veteran that can ride but not walk well is too lazy for ya??

I've never had any trouble going through a drive-through on my bike.

One time I did have some trouble about taking my bike into a store--there was nothing to lock it to outside. I left, but sent an e-mail to the chain's corporate headquarters about it, and said that if they didn't want cyclist customers to take their bikes into the stores, then they should install bike racks outside so that we could secure our vehicles.

I got a very apologetic answer and never had any trouble at that store again.

Is one allowed to use a motorcycle as part of the drive thru? and if so why? I don't see it being any different with a bicycle (other than a polluting motor...). It can't be a "speed" issue as you aren't supposed to be driving fast thru a drive thru.

I've never had trouble riding into drive throughs.
I've gone though the bank, the Walgreen's near me (CO though)
as well as the McDs (getting kids food on the way home).
Even the drive through liquor store.
Maybe cuz I'm a girl?

I suspect that there isnt even a company policy on it, but rather the employee giving someone
a hard time...

There are obvious safety concerns for someone on a bike in a drive-through lane. A soccer mom would plow right over you and not even notice it. If I was the manager I wouldn't serve cyclists either.

Go to some other drive-through if you want to get run over.

the one that pisses me off is wendys, their dining room is open till 11 and their drive through till 1 am

ive been out realy late hankerin for a burger and had them refuse to serve me because i was on a bike, i had no "go inside" option. Just because i cant drive the refuse to serve me, that is very discriminitory in my eyes.

This makes no sense. Are you saying that any time you put yourself in front of where a motorists will be going that you will get run over? If not, what makes a drive thru so special? Soccer moms aren't doing 50mph through them like they do on neighborhood roads.

It makes sense to me. People are more distracted picking change off the floor or writing out checks in a drive through. And brakes can fail or people forget they're not in Park or something. The consequences of these are a bit more drastic if these people are behind a bike or a ped rather than a car.

I agree, it's dumb. But mostly the companies are paranoid. On the road, you'd take action against the driver; in a drive through, you could sue the company. And they're willing to lose a few bikers' business rather than have any chance of a big lawsuit.

I would get the name of the specific person.

I would then contact the regional manager and complain with names of everyone involved.

Write a long letter about how you feel discriminated - Then you'll get your way !

On one hand you are saying the companies are paranoid and on the other you are saying they have a valid point. Do you honestly believe a cyclist using a drive thru is taking a significant risk? I don't see how it's any different than lining up in traffic at a stop light, aside from being on private property. FWIW, my mom was rearended in a drive thru and ended going through a lot of PT for neck pain. The rearender's insurance covered it all.

I don't think they have a valid point. I'm saying I'm not surprised that they're paranoid like this.
