Ok, its not a Criterium, but is in the C-Dale family. There are so few Cannondale pics on here I figured I'd toss it on. I no longer have this bike, but it was a good rider for the year or so that I had it. It was a sort of a beater, but I liked it!! Definatley a stiff ride!!!

[EDIT: forgot to list the model: 1993 SR400 3.0 Series with Shimano RX-100]

Well, not from the Criterium series , but very similar...with the cantilevered dropouts. However, I just sold it. The frame was a bit too small, and I was laughed at for putting a Nitto Technomic stem and clunky Acera RD on it.

Most people here on C&V think these are ugly, but I happen to like the look, especially in red. And the welds are super smooth, unlike most mass market aluminum frames today.

Nice HumBum.

I had the exact same model and color but it got stolen from my apartment in 1996 in Buffalo, NY. :(

I do miss it. I used to ride into Canada over the Peace Bridge on that thing and take it up to Niagara Falls and back all the time.

I had a Cannondale Criterium Series similiar to this bike, dropouts were the same, I think the only differance (besides mine being a Criterium) was mine was a strange pearl blue!? really sweet color, changed as the sun hit it, I sold it to a good friend that really needed it, I only rode it three times for under one mile! LOL!

I've seen that color, a deep grayish metallic blue. The Black Lightnings are also popular, but I prefer the red. I put a couple hundred miles on mine before deciding the ride was just too harsh for me, and the top tube too short (yeah, I know, the stem didn't help matters). The 700x25 tires helped, but not much. However, it was a quick bike with responsive handling (closest I've ever come to a road race bike).

Ugly? Who ever said that has been smoking too much crack:) I personally love the looks of the bikes, although I am a little biased. I race this bike, its a kick riding a bike that is 20years older than the whole field. Its funny when people dont understand why i have downtube shifters. Keep the pics coming, your bikes look sweet guys.

I have an early 90's R-800, presently not assembled. I am going to build it back up and sell it, as it is too small for me and beats the crap out of my aging body when I ride it. Nice drivetrain, though, Shimano 105 with brifters. It shifted flawlessly, just doesn't have the same appeal to me as vintage steel.

hey guys, i'm new to this forum and just recently got into biking.

i recently purchased what i THINK is this same bike.

the downtube says 3.0 series manufactured in the USA. it is the same red and has the same markings. it was fitted with mountain bike wheels and a flat handlebar. i recently had a diamondback (that was stolen after only a month...) and i was wondering if it was possible to upgrade the fork on this bike to a suspension type fork or if it is possible to upgrade the rear cassette to a 9 speed.... i didn't really know much about it when i bought it but i needed a bike to get back and forth from school everyday. any help would be appreciated!

The above ,blue Cannondale is a '90-'91,one of the least expensive.Nice though,I liked the RX100 parts.I think that's one of the best $100 buys I've seen.Aside from my taste, all these bikes "worked" damn well, seem to be fast, their riders seem fast when I see them on the road (as they pass me)or while I drive. All the red bikes are nice. The crit. had some tight angles..NO ?

Not a Criterium, but my Cannondale touring bike. Talk about a laughing stock, an aluminum bike for long hauls, no less with wooden fenders. It's actually quite comfortable to me.

If I found one of those older touring models, I'd pick it up in a heartbeat. The longer chainstays and chromo fork do wonders to improve rideability. They didn't move to carbon forks on aluminum frame road bikes for fashion alone.

I'll bet you're the only one with wood fenders on an aluminum C'dale frame! Nice touch.

It was complete mess when I bought it, so I had it converted to a single speed. It's white with
"Cannondale" in blue lettering across the top tube, which is covered up under electrical tape now.
I think it's an '88, but I'm probably wrong.

Hey, I'm a laughing stock-to-be, cause I just got one of these frames (free) that I'll be building up as a project. I think it's an '89 based on the first digits of the serial number and was a metallic green but subjected to a lot of rattlecan black and sticker goo. I was surprised at how long the chainstays are on this rig: over 18"! How were those plastic cable eyes attached? mine have sprung off...

86 SR600 bought as a frame/fork from C'dale by me in '86. I originally built it with Shimano 600EX but it's now running vintage Campy. I've a;ways liked its ride. It currently resides at the in-laws in E. Texas so I don't have to carry a bike back and forth.

It is now my commuter bike. I switched out the GP4/Record wheels for a cheap pair of clinchers with a Shimano freehub. It was pretty easy to change the spacing and re-dish the rear wheel. I also switched out the saddle for commuting.

I've got a 1987 in white. That bike has tried to kill me multiple times. It broke my collarbone last fall, it was either the bike or the two homeless people having sex in the bushes I was distracted by—I blame the bike.

Dang thing is a stiff, compact ride.

Hate the thing but not sure I'd ever get rid of it.

Hmm...I used to think that way...until I got my '87 Black Lightning. Threw my black B17 on it, thanked my lucky stars it has a cro-mo fork, and went out. The first ride I did (on 120 PSI 23c tires) was 40ish miles with the Chicago C&V ride. Next weekend, pulled off a century, and at the end of both, had absolutely no problems. The C&V was pretty stop and go, but the 100 miler, I stopped at 50 miles to give the RD tensioner a twist - aside from that went straight through. No numbness (anywhere), no discomfort. I fricking love that bike. Matter of fact, if I do in fact do RAGBRAI this summer, that'll be the bike I take. Granted, with a fricking HUGE saddlebag...

I will say the newer frames with the cantilevered dropouts are hideously fugly to me.

It really is a matter of fit, saddle, and tires. My 87 Criterium is a rocket to ride without any comfort downside.

It really is a matter of fit, saddle, and tires. My 87 Criterium is a rocket to ride without any comfort downside.

I totally agree. The weird thing though is that this bike is set up with the smallest frame (well, now it's tied with a touring bike), with the most saddle-to-bar drop of anything in the stable, yet I find the entire bar comfortable and could take this thing out all day long. If I do take it on RAGBRAI, I'd consider swapping out for a pair of 25c tires though. They'd have to be yellow!

Truly though - the bike is the antithesis of everything that is "supposed" to be comfortable. Soft saddle, bigger frame, level handlebar/saddle positioning, big tires (well, 28/32c at least) - this has NONE of that, and yet it's literally the best I own. Weird...

I'll have to take some new pictures, but I've swapped in another wheelset I had (Open Pro CD/28H/15-14 butted DTs/DA hubs) and some Richey SPD pedals onto the '89 CR. Probably swap the brake levers, I just can't keep the white hoods clean.

These old SR/CR/ST Cannondales just seem to encourage tinkering. :)
