BMX - a couple of stupid questions

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

first I have been watching some videos and it seems that some people pedal backwards when rolling backwards and some people just coast.
I was riding bmx back when Haro was just coming up and in those day if you had a freewheel you had to pedal backwards with the freewheel and could only coast backwards with a coaster brake. is that still the case?
and
is there a different Geometry between street bike and say dirt jumping bikes or race bmx bike?
rip me apart if you want or help a old man out

race bikes are light and aluminum, street bikes are chromo and tanks.

but is the geometry different?

Race bikes usually are different. Are far as street and dirt go things are pretty much the same. Generaly for dirt people prefer a longer rear end though. The differences are minor though, even when comparing to race bikes. The only real differences are the conponents and materials used. The riders the you see in videos just coasting backward without having to back pedal have a special hub called a "freecoaster". The name is pretty self explanitory but it allows the driver to be fully disengaged with a mechanisim inside the hub so the wheel will spin backwards freely. Exactly the same concept as the coaster brake, without the brake.

Race bikes and trail frames will probly have close geometry, like mellower headtubes around 73'-74.5' and generally a longer tt. But that doesn't mean you can't ride trails or race with a shorter, steep angled bike.
The people that you see flying backwards without pedaling are using what are called Freecoaster hubs. Basically when you go backwards you pedal backwards like once and the hub will disengage and it will stay like that allowing you to keep going backwards until you pedal either way. It's hard to explain.
EDIT: Haha Fuzzy beat me too it so don't bother reading all that, it's the same as his post.

to fakie without backpedaling you need a freecoaster hub.
racebikes are usually longer, lighter and such.
for the record, street bikes are not all tanks.
mine is 23 lbs with pegs and a brake.
i wonder why its called "fakie".
why not "backie" or somthing more descriptive of whats actually happening.

True. But that's probly because all these people are trying to ride sreet with S3's and Hawk frames.

S3's are actually pretty sturdy frames and I would ride one on street with confidence. As for Hawk frames, I would do nothing of the sort.
