When I ride I frequently notice a nail or similar obstacle to automobile tires on the road. I usually circle back and pick it up to spare some motorist from a flat tire. Does anyone else do this? I have wondered if there might be some way to let motorists know cyclists clear the road of hazards that could damage car tires. It might be a way to earn some good will with motorists.

I don't think they notice.

I stopped one time, a couple years ago, to pick up a nice carbide tippped, flat tip screwdriver out of the traffic lane. I was going to pass it up, but started thinking some poor soul might bust a tire on it, and went back for it. Now, this screwdriver was right in the center of the traffic lane on a two-lane NOL. Easy for cars to avoid by simply straddling it. So, while I'm standing on the side of the road waiting for traffic to clear JAM comes along and deliberately changes his line to run over it with his tires. Must have thought it was something I dropped. His front tire kicked it up off the road into the bottom of his car, where it proceeded to rattle between car and the road until his back tire ran over it. Made a lot of noise, but didn't hurt the screwdriver one bit. Pretty funny, it was unfortunate that he didn't bust a tire on it. That would have been really funny.:)

Occasionally there will be some large object in the middle of the road and when I stop to move it off to the side I usually see some sign of appreciation from passing motorist. It would be nice if there could be a sign or something that said something like “removed by your friendly neighborhood cyclists.”

Most recently I recovered a trashcan from the middle of the road. I passed it going out, and it was still in the middle of the road when I returned almost two hours later. Not a single lazy @ss cager had taken the time to move it out of the highway.

That would require getting out of the car.

2 days ago when I had to bike home all the way from downtown, I saw a old-fashioned worn knife near the right tire area by the curb. I had to stop, stand the bike and walk over to the knife and dropped it onto the grass. I just hope that the knife wasn't used in any murder case or anything like that  :p

I've moved a bunch of stuff, in one case "taking the lane" at a busy intersection and picking up a big hunk of metal while people waited and watched. They seemed to understand, but no applause.

I am more apt to deal with glass and other objects on the MUP rather than the roads. There is less chance of getting run down and drivers don't seem to appreciate it in any case.

I go for the big picture... stopping to help motorists that need a push, or need directions. A while back I helped a guy and his wife (she was way too small for the task) move a refridgerator from his truck. I just happened to be cycling by...

Maybe next time these folks see a cyclist, they will think of the one that stopped and helped.
