Is a Ted Shred jamming your foot inbetween the brake bridge and tire? I think that's the easiest and safest emergency stopping method.

Another thing to watch out for is skipping your chain off too. I think the idea is that if you ride brakeless, you don't have a backup. There's always a chance, although unlikely, that your brake may actually break (hm) too but if your brakes go, then your straps snap and then your chain explodes, then you were probably destined to bail that day...

But watch the chain tension! My chain skipped off going down a big hill one day on a busy busy road. Somewhat luckily, it skipped off to the inside and locked up, putting my bike into a zero-effort 20 foot skid with cars flying by wondering why i was stopping in the middle of nowhere... had it gone the other way (does it actually ever?) i could seriously have died.

hah. why are they called jamaican skids anyways?

I wanna see tandem cranks with 2 chains on flip flop hubs.

Break one chain? No prob, got another.

im gonna start rocking a brake cause my frame is drilled and its one more place i can add some bling.

If you run a ZeroG brake, your bike will be lighter than it was without a brake.

it's been done. here's one with two freewheels (that together make it a fixed gear)

If the right chain breaks you can still back pedal. If the left one goes.....
Still a neat looking set up even if only for the experiment. I like it!

double fixed so no worries really. Wouldn't this just make it that much more hard to skid and skip with? and where are his clips and straps? boy this guy is daring

no dude. if you take that route then i think you might have to say that fixed gear bikes are racist(within the context of jamaica ) as well. the idea is that poverty created two things simple bikes that did not coast becuase its easier to maintain and build. AND clips and straps can be a luxury. thats my half baked guess. ive heard a few things about it, but nothing totally concrete.

Gyeswho I think the real problem with dual side drive would be keeping your LS pedal from unscrewing itself due to precession (see Sheldon for df.) and fucxing up the crankarm, unless you could find a funny tandem crank meant for leftside drive.

U lock on the back tire has worked for me in case of an emergency stop... Works great with a shoe as well. Really well.

Also one to consider is to stick your index finger into the fork / tire clearance. Sure you lose your finger, but your bike will be saved.

I need that front fender. Any ideas where one would acquire such an epic accessory?

I never understood the whole "riding brakeless" thing until last weekend. I have always had a front brake on my track bike that worked just fine. I was down in Richmond and my brake was actin' a fool. I just couldn't get it lined up just right with my tire, and I was wasting everyone elses time. Two of the people I was with don't have brakes, so I just completley took it off and thought I'd take it easy. About 10 minutes into riding, I felt as safe as if I had a brake. Riding brakeless makes you a more alert rider. I found myself concentrating a lot on traffic patterns. Brakeless riding forces you to learn these things quickly. I can understand why people don't like it though. If you are a crazy mother ****er, you will prolly end up getting caught in a bad situation. I also never rode with toe clips before until this week. Bought myself a pair and I'll never regret it.
