After yesterdays Public Works Dept. meeting I describe here: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=284138 I was speaking with some of the board members who are also council members. One of them asked me about helmet laws.

I explained to him it is a topic of hot debate amongst cyclists & is probably not a good idea. He told me he recently had an accident on a bike, I did not ask & he did not tell me if he was wearing a helmet or not, or the extent of his injuries, if any. I advised him I advocate for the use of helmets, advise that people wear them but would not advocate for a helmet law. I think this kind of surprised him. He probably thinks I'm being hippocritical.

This is in part to what I have learned here. What the hell have you people done to me? How many others have you corrupted? ;)

Sounds like a good response to me.

What is hypocritical about recommending that people use helmets whilst cycling and not being in favor of a legal requirement to use a helmet whilst cycling?

I strongly recommend that people exercise regularly and are careful in their diet. But I am not in favor of legally mandated exercise nor nutrition codes.

I do not see that it is a good thing for the government to coerce people to exercise good judgment.

Not sure if there is some confusion but he asked me what I thought about it & that was my response. I think he was trying to get the perspective from a cyclist on the matter. Maybe as one of South Sioux City's law makers he is thinking about propsing a helmet law. Maybe it is because of his accident & injuries. I don't know & I did not ask. But I certainly would not support it. Unfortunatley I could not do anything about it because I am not a resident of South Sioux City. I think for people to have any say in the matter they have to be a resident.

Whether you "have a say" or not, your opinion is still valid and that's what he wanted. Good position, by the way, because if there is a mandatory use law, watch the local price go up on helmets!;)

Good call, I agree and advocate the same (although I sometimes ride without due to laziness)

One nice thing about no helmet laws is it seperates the people who want to be safe and the other people who don't care about thier safety. :)

I won't even touch that bit of trolling.

Good-O. Sounds like a reasonable and nuanced response to me.

Sounds to me as if you made a good response. We can't legislate morality or intelligence, imo.
