Just wondering if any one sets goals for their commutes? I rode with a guy that said he tried to get up the hills he road a mile faster each time he hit them. That seemed impressive.
Last week my goal was to just complete the week, not knowing what sort of shape I'd be in after several days of commuting 50 miles round trip. This week I know I can do it, so it isn't a problem. I am thinking of next week and attempting to ride everyday on my fixed gear. I tend to get lazy on the roadie, with the free wheel. I've ridden the fixed gear it twice this week, three times last week. I have two more days this work week so I might finish out the week on the fixed gear.

My goal is just to get to work on time, and to get home as fast as possible..at least faster than the cars. Its a short commute with lots of traffic.

My goal is to complete my entire career by commuting on a bike. 18 years gone, 12 years to go.

I'm very careful not to set performance goals; on my route, I need to put 100% of my attention on situational awareness. It would be awful if I were tempted to run a light in order to make a certain elapsed time, or average speed, or something.

So I guess my commuting goal is to never come into conflict with another vehicle.

My overall riding goal is to ride 100 times my age in miles every year. Commuting makes that a fairly easy goal to reach.

What he said (Rich Clark). And for me it's real simple: to commute as much as possible as safely as possible as fast as reasonable for as long as I can hold out. Then, when I retire, I'll switch to touring!!!

My main bicycle commuting goal is to be able to ride all the way to work and back everyday, every week, every month, every year.
That's about 145 miles per week. I have never sustained more than about 100 miles per week for very long, and my average is more like 80. Sometimes I have dropped as low as 20, or even zero!

I think a lot of the reason I haven't reached 145 yet is because
I'm not disciplined enough. I could take better care of myself.

But I'm not giving up on it!

After I meet that goal, I'll have to set another!

I'm largely with Rich C and Chester. The main reason I commute by bike is that it's simply the best tranportational alternative for getting to and from where I need to go. As a consequence, on these rides my goal is to get from point A to point B on time and in one piece. I tend to focus my "performance" on weekend rides which are generally a lot more challenging than my commute (there are no 1,000 metre climbs in Surfers Paradise).
