I'm heading to Monterey for three days at the end of the week and want to know some great routes. I don't plan to do Big Sur, but would like the "must ride" ideas for the coastal areas, 17 Mile Drive, etc. Are there any roads to avoid due to traffic, debris, etc.? Also, any great bike shops in the Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel area? Thanks!:)

Personally I like the ride from Marina to Monterey, and the "loop" around Asilomar is always nice. Weather's been pretty good on the weekend, so you shouldn't have a problem with ride gear. Check out http://www.vcmonterey.org/index.php for an area map, and Josleyn's http://www.joselynsbicycles.com/ or Winning Wheels http://www.mbay.net/~goshin/ for some LBS'. Hope that helps, Cheers!

I'd also suggest, if at all feasible, drive an hour or so south on Hwy 1, just beyond Lucia, to Nacimiento-Fergusson road. This is opposite Kirk Creek campground, and is arguably one of the most spectacular climbs on the coast. It switchbacks up almost 3000 feet, with views that are unparalleled. This is THE "must ride" on the central coast as far as I'm concerned. Don't miss it !!!
Cheers...

Sounds great! In fact, I wanted to head back down Hiway 1, so heck, my wife can shop in Carmel for a few hours and I can fly south on 1 and enjoy the ride. Sweet.:)
