Mountain Biking - Z1 At last.

Hi all

I just ordered the new Z1dropoff :D:D:D:D:D. I ll get it by monday and i really hope that my current brake cable fits...even if i have to remove all the spacers from my stem. If not then i ll need one of those new goodridge lines.
I ll keep you posted. A2 and mael thanks for the advice...i really hope that this will be money well spent.:beer:

Hey math, the fork should work great for you. I do not know if Mael. or a2 said anything but what do you weigh? The Z1 comes with medium springs which should be good up to about 85kg(approx. 190lbs.)

Also, if you ride aggressively, I would recomend changing the fork oil with in a month or two. I say this because once in a while Marzocchi will not put enough oil in them. Replace it with a good cartridge fork oil(7wt if you are doing mainly XC, 10 to 15wt if you tend to jump and do drops alot).


Until then, ride the shyte out of them and let us know what you think.

I agree with Slainte (DBD) about the oil and the spring weight. However, I'd re-emphathize changing out the oil after a month or so. That'll be the break-in period of the fork, and just like a car, there are always mineute (tiny) flakes of metal due to the machining process that are invariably left on the sliders and the stanctions. Swapping out the oil after the break-in period will extend the life of the fork.

I ordered them with the medium springs. Due to my frame i ll need about 20% of shag in order to get a nice head angle. The bike shop and marzocchi importers told me to get medium for my weight and frame (200lbs).

At 200 pounds you may end up wanting the stiff springs. Yopu are right on the cusp of medium and stiff :)

Agreed, I'd rather ride with the heavier springs and have a stiffer ride, than the lighter springs and bottom it out on big hits.

Well its the Dropoff model which is available only to Europe. They say that with the stiffer springs i might not get full travel on such a light bike as my own and that the mediums are good for people of up to 220pounds. Several users at mtbr confirmed this for 2003 Z1

Wow first I heard that...maybe your springs are different but medium are for 'average' guys and the stiffs are for post 190. At least here. :)

Well i saw somewhere that 2003 Z1 dropoffs are only sold in Europe. Fr, FRSL for USA/Can. The guy at LBS adviced me to run the Z1 with a bit more shag due to the 130mm travel in order to get my steering back. He told me that with the stiffer springs and a light frame i would not be able to use full travel. I dont intend to do any dropoffs or jumps so are the stiff springs a must for aggroxc/dh?

Zoch might be using a heavier oil in the DropOffs which would slow the compression down. That might be why they say the medium springs will work.

If you find your self bottoming the springs a lot you may want to put a 20wt oil in when you change it. If that does not help then you will need the stiffer springs.

Cool then i try it stock and if i got problems then i ll just get stiffer springs...He adviced me not to get the stiffer springs as standard as it would be veeeery stiff for me and my bike. He told me that if i had a 35pounds+rig doing drops and jumps then i would definately need the stiff...

Did you go with the QR20 axle or standard?

I went for the std one. I really hope that my 650mm front cable is enough though....i dont like spending more on for those goodridge ones...
