Commuting - that was weird...

So I was sitting at my desk at 3:20 (I rode my bike to work at 8:30) and I heard my front tire start to leak loudly. I investigated and found no thorns or glass in the tire, then sudenly as I was spinning the wheel, it stopped. Just like that! There's still probably 40 psi in the tire, WTF?

I wouldn't worry about it. That happens to me all the time. Especially if I eat beans the night before. :D

Seriously though, that is weird. Maybe a slow leak caused an air pocket to build up between the tube and tire (or rim)?

The night before my first commute I pumped the tires up to 100psi and checked everything over. I left the house for an hour and came back to the sound of my front tire blowing out!! Really wierd... the bike was in the same spot as I left it and the tires were rated for over 100psi. The leak turned out to be at the valve stem.

Never had a leak like the OP's but I blowed up a tire recently. The mystery blow-out thing happened to me two weeks ago while my bike was riding on the hitch mounted rack. I pumped up the tire before I left, loaded the bike, and when I stopped at my destination the front tire was blown off the rim at one spot and I had a long (16 inch slice) in the side of the tube. I blame a rim pinch that I did not catch mounting the tire and then strain on the pinched tube due to being brought up to pressure. My wife pointed out that this could have happened while I was riding and told me to be a little more careful about these things while I was changing the tube. :rolleyes:

I had a slow puncture the other day - pumped it up and went to work. Decided it was slow enough so pumped it up and rode home. 3 days later it was still full (weekend).

Check your valve stem. I've had a valve stem rupture but still leave 40ish psi still in the tube. I never figured out why it happened that way, but it certainly was a valve stem break (I could see it). I swapped the tube (it happened at work) before riding home and haven't tried pumping it back up again just to see when it starts hissing again.

I was thinking aliens with telepathy, but lasers would make sense and robots do have those. I think you might be on to something.

It was the valve stem. I tried gluing it back together since I used my last spare on a different bike (again). I could only get it to air up to about 60psi, but that got me to the train station and from the train station home. I still don't get how the aliens/robots managed to damage the tube without moving the bike at all and after so many hours.

I don't think your tire was seated right in the rim. The sidewall slipped off the rim, tube suddenly expands, and BOOM!

And to have it happen while riding sucks, to that I can attest.

Anti VC mice and carpet mites will do this all the time.














I would call a cycling friendly exteriminator post haste. Otherwise, I would pull the tube and check around the valve stem.
