Replacing an 853 downtube in Fla.?

A friend of mine found a Lemond 853 steel frame in a dumpster. Only problem is, the downtube is almost cracked in half. The rest of the frame looks straight, so I was wondering if it would be worth it to repair. I imagine it would be pretty easy to cut out the downtube and weld in a new one. Does anyone know what this might set me back, not including paint? Any shops/framebuilders I should look into here in Florida? Thanks.

Labor charges for replacing a down tube or a top tube generally run from $150 to $300, depending on whether it's a lugged frame or TIG welded, what part of the country you're in, the reputation of the shop, and other factors.

Add the cost of the replacement 853 down tube itself and paint.


If it's a nice frame, it's probably worth the effort.

Probably $50 for the tube, few hundred for the labor, another 100-200 for paint. also shipping to/from the framebuilder and paint shop.

Although it will cost a little bit more, you might consider adding S&S couplers while you are at it. since you are cutting out/replacing the downtube, thats half the job.
