Classic & Vintage - Is there a Stingray expert in the house?

getting a old style Schwinn Stingray Deluxe (66?) off my neighbor (hed rather see someone do somethin with it than leave it hangin in the garage in pieces), single speed coaster brake w/o springer, should i try to keep this thing original ? his kid messed with the wheel bearings and lost em along with the coaster brake / drive and the paint is extremely faded (blue by the way). Just figured id swap wheels on it and ride, Ive just been wonderin what the different "models" of stingrays were and what options they had (And what the options were on the Deluxe). everytime i search for em i see tons of different options like drum/disc/canti brakes, bar styles, w/s's, 3/5 speed, etc... and does a springer fork mean it was a krate? Im totally clueless and would just like to get a little schoolin on em, Thanks.

If the wheels look ok just put new bearings in . clean and wax the frame see what comes up. I put 4 coats of wax on paint that looked hopeless and it came up nice. I dont know much about the models but always wanted that springer fork. The krates had a smaller front wheel to go with the springer I think

Stingrays were the single speed with front and rear 20" wheels and foot brakes and no springer, Krates came with 20" rear slick and a 16" front wheel with springer forks and an Atom drum brake, rear canti brake, five speed with the top bar shifter, sweet duck tail fenders, theres the Lemon Peeler, Orange Krate, Cotton Picker, Apple Krate, Pea Picker, and I think there may have been a Charcoal Krate? or at least plans for one? I know a couple guys built them up themselves, a single speed Stingray Deluxe in blue is a common find, but a nice one none the less, the Stingray Deluxe came with cool duck tail fenders too, Ill see if I find some pics for you :)

Sure did, I was looking for pics at the same time and forgot my favorite, the Ghost :rolleyes: Im going to add the pics now, was kinda hard finding a Stingray deluxe?? but I found one in Purple? Grape I guess?

Thank goodness where I was raised there was no such thing as "politicaly incorrect" we could talk to, or call each other just about anything, and we knew that there was a meaning for all words, and we also knew that there was no truth to the made up meaning of words :) and beleive me when I tell you, there were also white, hispanic, and just about every other race cotton pickers out there too! ;) I believe that being politically incorrect only applys to those who have something to hide, or fear a false definition of a word (did I spell definition right?) so Cotton Picker it is! :) and yes, someone did make a Gay Krate, I saw picks in the Schwinn forum, it was actually a sweet bike and very well done! :) I have to say that the above statements reflect my opinion and mine alone, and I, in no way, am trying to disrespect anyone on this forum or any other forum/place as everyone including myself are entitled to there own opinion :)

I use the word gay as all my gay friends also use it to described themselves, including my gay sister, and as mentioned, if we know what we mean when we use the word "gay" and it doesnt bother us, why should it bother someone else? If you want to see that Gay Krate (its not a Stingray or a Fairlady) just shoot on over to the Schwinn site and do a search, as I mentioned in my post, I thought it was really cool and well done :)

Finding guts for the Bendix coaster brake and front hub should not bee too difficult. Schwinn rims were way above all others in finish back then. Tires if needed are around, probably uses 20 x1 3/4" front and 21 x 2.125 rear Junior Sting -Rays had 1 3/4" front and rear, note that the bead seat diameter is different between the two. A neighbor had a Sting -Ray from 1964 or 65 with a springer front fork, designed for a normal 20" front wheel, the Schwinn stor nearby, W.L.A. Bike and Hobby had them on display, not cheap back then, like $25. when a new base Sting Ray was $55 or so.


Boy I like my Schwinn bike, Schwinn is the finest bike! As heard from the TV in 1965. Can you inagine a bike maker buying a National commercial on TV now?

Haha, the politically correct comment was meant to be kind of a snarky one, I was unable to resist after you made a comment on political correctness and used the word gay that way in the same sentence. :rolleyes: I use the word that way sometimes but I really need to stop, some people do find it offensive, and rightly so.

The high lighted area above is the only thing I can think of when you mentioned that I "used the word gay that way" but again, we all know what the true definition is, and we all know what it is used for today, even the gay folks! :) that Gay Krate, even though it was "perceived by others to be typical of gay people" was a hit when I showed it to my daughters best friend, my own best friend, my cousin, my older brothers brother in-law, and my sister....all gay :) you see its all up to the person your talking to, if they have something to hide, or fear a false definition of a word, then the problems with them :D

but weren't the Schwinn tire sizes different (but the same as far as numbering goes!) than others, like with the middle & heavy weights (ISO's different)? I might be wrong, but i'm thinkin' I'm not.

all i know is a 26x1.75 is NOT the same as a 26x1-3/4 schwinn.

This bike is not an orig Schwinn Krate, it was painted/built by someone, and painted/built very well, looked like it rolled out of the Schwinn factory! and yes, there were pink Schwinn girls bikes, either a Slich Chic or a Fair Lady, or something along those lines, Ive even seen little kids riding them around my area, Ill see if I find a pic.

Yeah, I found some pink fairladys searching around. Schwinn did not make a slik chik or krate in pink though. I had a violet one just like that but I traded it for some parts.

What year did they make the two speed automatic?, was it a DeLuxe?
