If you can, please do something about this in your state.

I wonder if this is ammunition & fodder for the Forester acolytes/disciples & theri anti-MUP rhetoric? (This is not meant to be a troll question, but something serious. So please don't get your panties in a wad over it.)

Sure it is. Otherwise you wouldn't of used the term rhetoric.

Enhancements-funded projects include a mixture of very useful sidewalk and other pedestrian safety projects, useful bike paths and bridges for transportation cycling, recreational paths that are virtually useless for utilitarian cycling, and beautification projects. I'll be sad to see some of these projects cut, while others I think are acceptable to sacrifice under tough economic times.

My preference is that the state governments stop calling basic pedestrian facilities like sidewalks and crosswalks "enhancements" and instead incorporate them into their basic road standards, maintenance and safety budgets. If they don't have enough state money to build a road that works as well for pedestrians as for motorists, then don't build the road!

Similarly, I wish the state governments would standardize on signal sensors that detect bicycles and wider pavement in the vicinity of the outside lane on busy, higher-speed roads.

Locally, we have more than enough political support and local money to build recreational off-road paths using our parks&rec budget. If the occasional MUP-bridge over a highway were to be included in the highway budget, as a required expense of building highways so that they don't badly dissect communities, all paid for by the gas taxes of those who want to go fast on highways, then "enhancements" really wouldn't be needed.

I prefer that federal transportation dollars be concentrated almost exclusively on interstate travel, on a lower budget than what they have now, and that states deal with intrastate transportation needs on their own. I-95 through NC needs fixing, and other states should help pay for it; meanwhile, if we want to build a bike path in my community, I think we should pay for it with local money, and I'm glad to pay those state and local taxes.

The american people voted for a government that undertakes massive military adventures without being prepared to make the sacrifices of a wartime economy. The English civil war (1640) started because the king thought that he had been appointed by god so he could do whatever he thought was right, but the parliament wouldnt vote him the funds for his projects.

The interesting thing is that the Bush family traces it's bloodline back to the English monarchy... :p

Pretty ironic that we originally rebelled against a king named George. ;)

I'm pretty sure that the people who care about improving the non-car infrastructure of the US are not the same people who voted for that arrogant, corrupt, and incompetent cabal currently occupying the White House. (And BTW, you can't afford to be too smug about your neighbors to the south; your current PM isn't exactly a candle in the dark, and somebody must have voted for him...)
