I'm looking for a 80's - 90's steel road bike just to have something to play around with. Found this one for sale locally, but I honestly don't know what a fair price might be. Looking for some insight.

Van Tuyl Road Bike w/ Campagnolo Record
Asking $350

Here's the add:
Great parts bike
Older Van Tuyl Road Bike
Colombus frame and fork in ok, poor condition
Campagnolo Record equiped
- Brakes w/ finger shifters [looks like downtube shifters from the pics]
- Cranks
- Pedals
- Front and Rear Derailleurs
- Hubs
- Seatpost
- Headset

Here's what the seller said in an email:

The bike is certainly rideable but the frame, which is Columbus tubing, is older and in ok condition (several scratches and a small dent in one of the tubes). The greatest value is in the Campy Record Componenets but again the bike is very rideable. In its day, it was a pretty sweet bike, obviously Van Tuyl is Dutch and they built excellent bikes.

Sounds like the seller is offering a pretty good deal to you.

Sounds like a good deal if the Record components are in good shape. The frame may not be worth restoring depending on the dent situation. Another question - clincher or sew-up? and which do you want/prefer? That can add a few $ if you need to swap. But the components may be enough by themselves.

Are you getting it to ride and to improve your tinkering? Or to sell at a profit? If the former, it's a bit high in my opinion (which isn't worth much).

I guess the other question is what specifically does he mean by "Record"? Is this Nuovo Record, Super Record, C-record?

I still think you'd be hard pressed to fit out a Columbus tubed frame with any variety of Record components for $350.00

Too rich for my blood but I'm kinda cheap(poor). That campy stuff does seem to go for good money . It sounds like a good quolity project depending on that dent in the frame.
