Classic & Vintage - Is anyone riding vintage wheels on TOSRV?

I'm going to ride TOSRV on a single this year for the first time in a long time as my two usual tandem stokers are otherwise occupied. So should I break out the vintage steel/aluminum? Curious if any C&V'ers are riding?

I was planning on it, but I have come to the realization that I'm just not ready for it yet. Still way too heavy and in terrible shape, and the *20 temps and 50mph wind we are getting here now ain't helping.

Anyhow, TOSRV '08 on a vintage Peugeot UE-8 is my plan.

I usually ride it on a red 1970 Falcon San Remo. I'll be wearing something appropriately C&Vish, in wool.

No one will be in shape this year. Winter just doesn't want to leave. If you've been on TOSRV before you know that weight has never stopped many people from riding. Besides, it's flat. The challenge is more in your mind. (And an intelligent selection of foul weather gear). Just ride with us slowpokes and we'll make Carney Park before the beer truck closes.

Last year threatening weather predictions scared away a lot of dilletants and sent the carbon fiber crowd packing. At the last rest stop on Sunday the pavilion was filled with an unusually large percentage of steel lugged bikes with fenders. I wonder what the correlation was there.

Never done one, heck, I've never been on a group ride :rolleyes: And I have not been over 40 miles since the bike-a-thons I did as a kid.

Slow for me is a vast understatement. I'm 240lbs of flannel clad, farmer-built clyde creeping slowly across the prairie.

The Tour of the Scioto River Valley is the granddaddy of bike tours. To a great extent the bike tours that followed were based on the experience of the organizers of TOSRV. It included the challenge of thousands of participants and overnight accommodations. The name had such cache that many bike tours included TOSRV in the name. (It helped if they had a river that started with the letter S.)

It was in the right place at the right time when the bike boom hit and a whole lot of baby boomer young people wanted to get out of the house for a weekend. A lot of the same people still ride it which means crowd's not quite a young as it used to be.

Living in the Great Black Swamp region, I have trouble imagining any other part of Ohio being described as "flat". The biggest hill around here is the freeway overpass.

I rode it last year for the first time in nearly 10 years. I rode my "vintage" 1980's Saint Tropez. A few people commented on the "Duran Duran" tacky 1980's paint - sparkly white to pale pinkish red fade, set off with Conti Orange Grand Prix 3000 tires.
I have my registration but haven't sent it in. I definitely have gained a lot of weight and haven't ridden much this spring. I'd like to ride my 1978 Masi Gran Criterium with tubulars but I need to get the rear wheel relaced and a new axle installed so I can run a 7 speed freewheel. So I'll probably be out on the Saint Tropez again, now clad in grey and black Michelins.
TOSRV is very validating for us C&V-ers. Did anybody see the skinny santa claus guy with the knee high tube socks riding a perfect condition LeTour from like 1977, all the while having like the past 30 years of TOSRV official numbers pinned to his back? That was wild. :)
By the way, if any class C, (or B) rider is in the Dayton Ohio area and is seeking a riding partner for this year's ride - PM me, as I need to be persuaded to get motivated.

Sorry for not replying to the thread been kinda crazy past couple days. Maybe we old guys can get together at the start and ride together? I've been thinking about riding the Alan. It has enough TOSRV's on it that it could probably find it's own way or maybe the Mondia or as a coming out party for the Paramount. Anyone interested in meeting and riding together?

I need a partner. I'm in the Dayton Cycling Club but don't have any buddies I know of that are going this year. Where are you located SVT? My dad has a Focus SVT by the way. I have a Honda Element with a hitch rack. I was going to email the touring captain in my club, or maybe just wait until next year for TOSRV. I'm a little too big to ride an ALAN. I'm just over #250 again. So I guess my average speeds for TOSRV this time of year would be in the 14-16 mph range depending on the wind and other factors. I guess if there was an interest I could prep my Masi with the Bullseye tubular wheels. I was thinking of ordering a set of Continental Competition 700x25's from Excel Sports Boulder.

I'm in New Jersey now but will be traveling back to Columbus for Tosrv The Friday before and overnighting in Cols. (Lived there for 23 yrs) Sounds like your avg speed and mine are probably pretty compatable I'm figuring probably 16 - 17 somewhere in there although TOSRV is a lot flatter terrain than we have where I am now. If you're going to trot out the Masi I suppose I would have to bring the Alan just to keep it Italian lol
