Southern California - what is the status of riding GMR?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Looking to go for a nice ride tomorrow and not sure if GMR is still closed to riders except on Sundays..

Gonna be like that at least thru May from what I've heard. I ran into a group of cyclist at Baldy Village that rode up Baldy Rd cause the consturction guys aren't letting anyone thru at all! Also heard authorities are citing riders on GMR.

The road is tore up again just above the previous repair. It's down to one lane so I doubt you'll get by if they are working.

 I'm so miserable about that road. That was the prettiest and safest road to cyclists and now the motorcyclists will cause havoc (once it opens). :(

Saw something about the Williamson Rock area being off limits because of the mountain yellow-legged frog being an endangered species.

Wow, this sucks. GMR is the climb for cycling in southern cal ... or at least in SGV. I guess climbing is now relagated to Chantry Flats, Upper Tujunga (or was it Upper Little Big Tujunga)?

Yes, the Big Ts are awesome. Vertical Bob along with some other friends introduced me to that over a year or so ago. Also, Little GMR is doable (although steeper than Big GMR). But losing Big GMR as a motorists free road really is a blow for cyclists IMHO. We'll just have to be more careful up there and really be alert and aware of motorcyclists.

What really sucks? I was almost taken out head on by one vehicle up on GRR. For a split second I thought I'd have to take a dive over the mtn side in order to avoid being hit. I was hugging the shoulder on my side heading down. A vehicle was heading the opposite direction, also hugging MY shoulder. All I could do was let out an "MJ" yelp. I was lucky he saw me and was able to steer away from me as his tires screeched from his speed. The scariest part was that it was one of the forest guys in a green forestry vehicle.
The traffic and motorcycles guys have always been considerate when I've been up there. But an open road will mean more traffic.:(
Did I speel "screeched" correctly?

I almost got taken out on Hwy 39 today by one of those dump trucks with a plow on the front. A car was coming in the opposite direction, so he couldn't get around me but thought he could until the last moment when he slammed his breaks. Scared the crap out of me hearing its ties squeal and turning and seeing the plow right behind me.
I should've been wearing a mirror today... :(

Nope, I think my legs still haven't fully recovered from Solvang. At the East Fork, I started cramping in my left leg quads. By 2700 feet I determined I wasn't going to be able to shake it off, so I decided to turn around and go back to work instead. My leg has been sore all afternoon, and the rollers on the way back were causing me some pain, too.
I'll try it again after the Alta Sierra. I may do Chantry Sunday afternoon.

Well, after Hemet, I have to start climbing or I will have to back out of Sea to Summit (which I do not want to do). So, I see Crystal Lake as a ride I MUST do soon. Perhaps you'll want to join and I bet I can sweet talk Vertical Bob into it as well. He loves that little hill. :D
OH, and gee, I wonder WHY your legs are sore! ;)
