Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - 28km/h to 48km/h headwinds SUCKS

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So I took about the Guru today for a little spin. i was expecting to do about 15 to 25km. I would have been the first time I have been on this bike outdoors since last Nov. I have been outside once this year on my my true North (commuting bike with fenders and soon to have racks). The first ride of the year was a sunny and cold day, around 1+C but i have the clothing to bear it and it was a good ride to clear the cob webs. This was last Saturday. Today, different story. I knew it was windy but I felt I could battle through ti. No way. As I found out after I came back from 5 km of suffering the wind was gusting up to 48km/h. It felt like I was climbing Mont Royal in Montreal.
I will attempt to go out tomorrow morning as it should be a calmer outside. This weather has rreally been bad lately and I am trying everything I can to get out weather like this is brutal.
I feel bad though as I only got 5km. I have to really build this up. I think the first ride with the cycling club will be 55km and I want to do it at 23-25km avg. Must starting putting kilos in.:)

Our weather here has been gusty for a month - winds are 'calm' in the mornings at 10-20 mph then get gustier in the afternoons to 15 - 35 mph. Our routes are figure 8 loops of about 10 miles each and the winds seem to shift directions during our rides so there is NEVER a stretch with a nice tail wind that lasts longer than 15 minutes.
I'm tiring of the windy conditions but my HRM shows that I burn at least 100 calories more per hour when fighting the wind on a 20 mile ride. At least there is a breeze that cools me down...

Headwind=perpetual uphill grade! It makes you stronger!

I got back into riding 2 years ago (after 40+ years). The first summer was nice and I would go out of my way to run errands on the bike.
Last summer, it seemed to be perpetually windy. I spent the summer in winter mode, planning my errands to bike the shortest difference possible.
What I don't understand is that on a 30 minute round trip, I have a stiff headwind in 3.5/4 directions?:)

Because the "Wind Gods" are trying to make you stronger and feel your cardio-pulmonary health is one of their primary concerns!;) :D

"shortest difference possible"
Make that shortest distance!
Wind Gods don't want to see old Bill have a heart attack do they?
I have to ride very upright because of a bad back, so I'm not aero at all.
Weather was actually very nice today (low 70's), so I made multiple short trips. Warm really helps the joints/muscles loosen up and riding is so much easier. Really nice not having to be bundled up like an Eskimo for a change!

Actually, head winds blow. Although it would be nice if they sucked.

I saw that, but knew what you meant:p I just ain't a grammar Nazi!;)
I'll ride in the sun. I'll ride in the dark. I'll ride in the rain. I'll ride in the snow (if it's safe). Uphills. Straight a ways.
I hate HATE HATE wind. In NYC there is never a tailwind even if I come back the same way - the way the wind swirls it's always hitting one part. Lately it's been really windy - takes the fun for me right out of it.
All that to say - I hear ya :)

wind is absolutely the worst, no question. I went round the lake here yesterday, headwinds going out, headwinds coming back. Someone up there hates me.
I've been over Alps, but the toughest day's cycling I ever did was out in the sticks in Northern Switzerland, flat as a pancake but 2 hours into driving wind and rain, zero cover. Utterly soul-destroying.
Toughens you up though, makes you appreciate the nice days more. Only way to treat it is like an uphill - down into your normal uphill gears/cadence and grind it out.
