View Full Version : Derailleur on a Rohloff frame?

I'm about to buy a frame called the Thorn Raven that's made for the Rohloff hub, and doesn't have a rear derailleur hanger. Here's a pic of the dropputs:

I live in a medium theft risk area, so I'd be interested in installing and using a Sram dual drive (3 speed hub with 9 speed rear derailleur) on the frame when at home, and switch to the Rohloff when going on a tour.

I know I could always use a second commuter bike and put the Raven in storage between tours, but I'd rather not do that. Another alternative would be to mount a Nexus hub, but here in San Francisco I need a wider gear range.

Would a clip-on derailleur hanger exist that would fit this frame?
Thanks in advance.

How committed to this frame are you? If it were me I'd go with a frame intended for a dérailleur and use the Rohloff intended for such frames. You'll need a tensioner for the Rohloff, but that's a a small price to pay

A $4 Adaptor claw is all you need. You wouldn't use the bolt that comes with it, due to the vertical dropout, but the quick release skewer will hold it in position just fine. Only difference is that it will be a bit tricky to remove/reinstall the wheel since the derailer will be flopping around.

Why not just run it single speed?

Edit: nevermind, just read the SF = gears comment.

I thought of that, but the vertical dropout threw me off. (Largely because you only really see the claws on horizontal drops.)

Rohloff recommends using Pitlocks with their hub. It may be easier to buy and use a set of those than worry about swapping your hubs in and out.
