View Full Version : Suggestions for a new bike
I've decided to give the LD riding thing a try and trade the MTB in for something that easier to pedal on the pavement. I searched this forum for recommendations, but I'm going to throw my question out there. I'm looking for an entry level bike to ride long distances/brevets with. I'm not too crazy about drop bars, but I guess it's the best way to go. My budget is around $1,200. What bike should I be looking at. Thanks in advance.

Brevets? there is a type of bike designed specifically for them, the Randonneuring bike. Bruce Gordon entered one in a custom bike show in japan and won first place. You might want to check on the RUSA site as well as the UMCA site for details. More stable then a road racer but lighter then a touring bike. Rivendell also makes bikes for your needs.

I would start with an old nice lugged steel bike(with eyelets) just a bit on the big side of a perfect fit. Use this to get an idea of what you like before spending more money. That's what I would do, I have no idea what you will do.

I did exactly this, then built up a Surly Cross check.
Looking at something light and fast next.
