About a year ago, I ran over some glass when I was on a tour. Of course, it is a hassle when you are on the road and you are holding up the group.

I replaced the tubes front and back with heavy-duty thorn resistant tubes and loaded the tubes up with Slime. Aiye, Mates, I wouldn't be stopped by glass again!

After returning home, I switched to my normal commuter for riding around and then would hop on my touring bikes just for kicks. Hmm, I thought the touring bike was heavier than I remembered -not as fast or as fun of a ride.

I should have figured out that the sluggishness was from the wheels, but I didn't.

Today, I had to replace some spokes and noticed how heavy the tire/tubes were when I took them off. I switched the tires back to standard weight tubes without Slime and MAN! what a difference it makes. It feels like I am riding a whole new bike. It is so much zippier and faster.

The lesson is that Slime and heavy-duty tires/tubes comes at a huge price in terms of energy and speed.

Good timing Mike! I was gonna post about wheels myself. I've been doing my normal loop at the local trail lately in around 52 minutes. Rode the other day and it took me almost 55. It was my fourth day straight so I thought maybe I was just tired. Took off a couple days and rode it again. 56 minutes! I was ticked. Then I remembered I had put on my new wheels with heavy tubed tires. Switched to my Crossroc's with tubeless tires and did the loop in 51 minutes. There definately is a difference.

Someone I know once sugested to me that putting water in my wheels (not tubes, but wheels) would make for a smoother ride. I shut them up by saying that water does not compress, unlike air and that is why we use air. I couldnt be bothered with the marathon effort involved with detailing him about the centrifugal forces of the extra weight.......
