Vehicular Cycling (VC) - An old one...

I picked this one from way back, because it combines the antipathy of some radio talk shows towards cyclists and the public attitude of anti-cyclist sentiment. The source of the post is no longer available, as I clicked on the link and it was not there, being almost 4 years old. But anyone with a memory will know that this is not an isolated incident. It is derived from the response to an e-mail a forum member sent to his local radio station at the time:




"Our morning show includes a good deal of animated banter, between callers and on-air personalities, that can be both humorous and informative. The intention is always to entertain our listeners. After all, what could be more entertaining than watching a cyclist take a tumble?

During a couple of shows this week, and on many others stations nationwide, time was spent by callers and on-air personalities discussing how drivers could make cyclists get off the road. During this discussion, comments were made which at the time we felt were humorous in nature, especially the one about the gay cyclist in spandex landing under a truck. We know you must have loved that one!"

After I re-read that one, I wanted to join Critical Mass.

So let me get this straight.
You read a comment that can no longer be confirmed, so there is really no proof at all right now that it was actually said.
This comment has pissed you off.
So now you want to join a group of people who has been discussed as of late about their being violent, ignorant, anarchists?
Why?? So you can throw your bike through the window of a radio station? :D

It'd make more sense to join a gay rights parade (if that was the comment you found so upsetting) or some other "legal" gathering which the masses actually understand. These rides have been going on for years now. If the "masses" actually understood the reason behind the rides then there'd be no more need for them. But it appears to me that the only people who know a CM ride is going on are those involved in it, and the only people who know what they are about are.... ummm.... no one.

If you want to be outraged by some current DJ doo-doo. Look up Don Imus' recent comments about the Rugters' women's basketball team. NBC is apologizing all over itself about their cash cow's latest audience boosting "gaffe". Even Imus is "apologizing."

Imus should have been off the air years ago. He's an embarrasement.

Commercial radio is exactly why I sprung for an iPod. No listening to mediocre music, obnoxious DJs, or threats to the lives or safety of other human beings for the sake of ratings. Best of all, none of the stress, sadness, anger, or mindnumb-ness from having to listen to crap. It was worth every penny, IMO. :)

Why do you think i like the cbc? (serius satelite 137 if you subscribe) Not a tonne of "popular" music, but good stuff that makes you think.

Me, I prefer NPR or my random playlist of the day. Last week, Les Miserables powered my brain while I rode for a couple commute trips. Nothing like a good ol' revolution musical to get you up and running (pedalling?). Poor Gavroche, though!

What I have wondered far too many times in the early morning waking hours is why the heck there is an Imus TV show... the guy is a statue, barely moves, and barely makes a dent on the radio airwaves; why show a picture of this freak doing his mumble routine??? :rolleyes:
