Living Car Free - wahoo. I'm expermentin with being car free.

Car is in the shop with clutch repair. Because of the holiday, won't have the car until Thursday. For some a crisis. I'm wanting to see how being car free feels. About to go out and do some grocery shopping with four panniers. I like to do a fresh shop daily anyway. As the Europeans do. previously , I'd categorize us as being car lite.

I had a similar experiment last year, car battery died, didn't have the cash for a new one, so the car sat, it was 3 weeks before we got around to replacing that battery. While I could easily be car free, my SO doesn't want to be......

I would just leave the car in the shop;) :D ...but the storage charges might cost more than the car is worth:eek:

Tomorrow is not only Easter. April 8 is my wife's birthday. So, How do I get a birthday cake home? Today, I did get her flowers and chocolate tho. Groceries just fit into my two panniers. Her flowers were Hanging out the end of the rack trunk, flopping in the wind . Took it slow getting home. Did not loose too many pedals of the half dozen roses. Maybe the air opened up the roses a bit.

Great motivation. If more people would be car free, we would see a helluva lot more millionaires.

Do what I do and take the bus or whatever transit system your place have. If you don't have one or don't trust it, Call for a taxi. I usually have somebody calls for a taxi if I end up shopping late and request for a VAN (so the bike can fit in the back).

The cost of these things are still a lot less than the cost of using a car. I'm currently car-free for the last half-year and have only started biking in the last 2 months. Jeez, I should have had started a long time ago and looked for a better bike when I had the money then.

Coming back from where our car went kaput, we had an Anne Frank experience . The mechanic offered to drive us back home after the transmission went kaput. The hotels were full. No vacancies. Missed the last train. And the night air was chilly. It was 100 miles to our place.
The mechanic insisted on taking us home at no charge. Said he'd done it before. We tipped him mightly.
one should always carry your bike on the car rack. Could have gotten in an unexpected century. Yes, I believe people are still good.

So, How do I get a birthday cake home?

I could easily manage a small cake on my bike... the other choices would be to walk (It's just over two miles round trip to the store and back) or get the ingredients and just bake one at home... it's really not that hard. :)

Tupperware has a nice cake carrier. It works well for carrying round cakes on the bike luggage rack. For larger square cakes why wouldn't resting it on the handelbars like you would a big pizza box? I only carry the round ones that fit in the tupperware carrier.
