We are having a nice little cold snap down here in NC this weekend. I am hoping that this is the last of it...and that cycling heaven is just ahead. I'm going to see how it warms up today. I may go for a run instead of getting out on the bike. I plan to really step up my mileage next week, as I have my first races starting to sneak up on me.

See, when I know a weekend is a potential bust and I'll be trapped at home, here's what I do:
1) Morning of family visit, stash bike, trainer, and set of bibs in a shower.
2) Close shower curtain.
3) Family arrives; chat for a bit.
4) Excuse myself to use the restroom
5) Hop on bike, crank out a 2x5min interval with a 1-2min rest.
6) Put bike and trainer back in shower, keep bibs on under clothes.
7) Shock in-laws by coming out of restroom sweating profusely and short of breath.
8a) Family is concerned about my health and well-being and tell me to get some rest. Time for more intervals.
8b) Convince family that I am suffering from some sort of GI problem and use that as an excuse to visit the bathroom more times during the day.

Actually I am looking forward to seeing all of the family tomorrow. Haven't seen my oldest daughter in a month and my wife's family can be engaging and entertaining.

I like holiday's that bring the family together even if they are based upon the parables of a Jewish insurgent.

I may actually take a moment to be thankful I have the good health and ability, (although limited), to ride. :)

Nah, if the Army wanted you to have a family, they'd pay idiot Joes more than their unmarried counterparts, to encourage them to spit out kids. They'd also give female soldiers fat financial settlements, and let them get out of the Army after they decide to get preggers and have kids.

Oh...wait...

A bad weekend for me too. I took a leisurely ride down to Mt Vernon yesterday with a teammate (nearing rush hour--we were just tooling around on bikes avoiding traffic and hard work).

Pedestrian took me out. I should've just run him over. Turning into passing lane when I called out to pass, stopping, staring, me yelling more, more deer in the headlights action. Off the trail. Heading towards tree. Tried to get back onto trail. Shoulder too low. Strike side of wheel on asphalt. Boom.

Of course, they said it was my fault. Offered me a ride in their Camry that apparently had a TABLE in the back. Uh, no. They also kept walking down the trail for a while as I sat on a tree stump with my head down to avoid fainting or puking from the dizziness. I was seeing stars. No helmet or head damage. Just thought my elbow had exploded for a while. My teammate had to chase them down after they didn't reappear for a LONG time. That's when the accusations, lies, and general BS started coming from them.

Most of the damage was to me (the cold snap clothing really helped protect me there!), but the rear axle might be bent. Needs some recabling / new brake cable housing. Ugly brifters, but no need to replace yet.

Estimated time of repair (since everyone in town is out of my bar tape and we may have to order parts for the wheel) April 21st.

I guess I don't have to worry about whether I have time to go race next weekend. No more collegiate races for me this season. :(

No training for me either. Boo.

Sorry. Rant over.

The 'botto-m'? But yes, that's a GREAT place to stash your family. I've been adopted by the family upstairs, but all I have to do is wander upstairs after my post-RVV nap to watch the last round of the Master's and get force-fed too much incredibly delicious turkey.

It was freaking 45F when I left for my ride this afternoon, there was also a 10-15mph wind that was gusting up near 25. I layered up and I still froze. Stupid cold snap!

No riding tommorw as I'll be with the family.

The awesome convenience of this state of affairs @ times like Easter is impossible to convey in a simple forum post, but the possibilities boggle the bike weenie mind. I will be dealing with 25+ in-laws in a post-ride lactic acid haze. Hopefully I will not say anything I later cannot recall, but have cause to regret.

Did the first group ride of the year today, 35 miles and 2,500 feet of climbing.....not too bad for around here. Felt like complete **** though....haven't felt well all week; stomach feels slightly sour/upset, get a bit off-balance from time to time and just have no "snap". Felt like I wanted to barf on any climb I put any sort of effort into. But....all in all it was a good time.

Too cool and windy for me to get out on the bike today. I decided to go out for a run. I clocked 7 miles in 1 hour 5 minutes. Nice workout. If tomorrow is like today, I'm planning a two hour trainer session on the bike.

It was actually about 30º rolling out this morning down in Bergen County NJ. Partly because of the cold weather, the Park Ridge shop ride (aka Tour de Phred) was as fast as I've ever seen it, it's typically not quite so ballistic. When I jumped on the paceline was going 27mph (it was an effort just to bridge up after making the Uturn to catch the ride) and the speeds never dropped below 22-23mph for 20 miles or so, 25-30mph much of the ride. I think it was because of the cold temps, a few guys @ the front really had the hammer down. But once you're warmed up in that kind of weather it's fine, it wasn't that windy, no precip, really not such a bad day to ride all things considered.

It was the Tour de Phred-less today, the pace was pretty much racing guys only by the latter half, I managed to hang today. Maybe this 'rest day' thing is working.

On a different note, a few nights ago I mentioned to my mom how much I was looking forward to watching the Tour of Flanders on Sunday night. She suggested that I might want to tape it. I asked why, and she said because of the family dinner. "Is this something we had already planned," I asked innocently. "Well, it is Easter," was her response. D'oh! (slapping forehead sound) I knew that!

The Easter ride was punctuated by a wicked westerly wind. That was the bad part. And of course it became a tailwind for the long ride home. But the ride out was interminable. 73 miles, tons of hills (including one 5.5 mile climb), 5 hours on the bike. I felt cold once, at the bottom of a 5 mile descent. Climbing (which was much of the ride) I was nice and toasty. 26º when I left here, 35º upon my return about 1PM.

No weather condition in cycling: rain, snow, cold - sucks harder than blustery wind. The only compensation is that when you're turned JUST right it becomes a booster rocket and you can ride 25mph like Dr. W for a while. It still does SUCK however.

i started doing a different tuesday night group ride, which is composed of a bunch of local racers. the last 15km was riding into a headwind.

the final, town-line type, sprint, maxed out at 35 kp/h.
