Touring - Why are Brooks Champions Chafed?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Sorry for the petty question but I can't help but wonder. It looks like about a 1/32" gouge. On the two standards I've owned, I never thought, "Jees, this thing really needs to have hunks of leather cut away from the sides."

LOL.
I don't like the looks of it either, but it's offset by the nicer-looking copper rivets, so pick your poison. I wish they'd offer the higher end models with a choice about the weird little line, and I especially wish they would offer all saddle types in all the colors they offer.
