Bit of drama on my ride today. I caught up to a rider today on a stop light at Sunset Beach, just over the bridge from seal beach. I pulled up next to him and said "Hi, nice bike". He had a Litespeed Vortex sittn on a pair of ksyrium ES's. He glanced at me, said nothing, then I was on his ignore list. How tough is it just to say "morning"? Fine. We hit a another light and I didnt say anything. Dead silence.

I didnt pass until we were clear of the traffic lights. My normal Saturday ride is hauling my ass down to Newport Beach and back, trying to beat my previous avg speed over around 40 miles. Anyhow, I pass him, not trying to drop him. He was going just a tad slow for my effort. Well, he grabbed my rear wheel. For some reason I go faster when someone is sucking my wheels. Reflex?:D I couldnt drop him on the flats but I knew there were section coming up with bit of elevation gain going into Huntington Beach. Once we hit bit of slope, I dropped the hammer. It didnt take long.

He did caught up to me by the mess at the Huntington pier. I was sitting at a red light and he pulled up. He talked to me! He asked if I raced and said I was pretty strong. I told him I wasn't that strong, then I took off. I didnt see him after that. I ended up going all the way down to Newport Coast and back. Things like this make my ride little more interesting, with a bit of competition on the road.

Give him the benefit of the doubt...maybe he just wasn't in a mood to say anything. Now, you are probably right however its not good to assume the worst out of people. A bad habit I too have.

For my money, if you're on a bike, you've proven your worth. I talk to everyone :)

Back in the day that attitude was worthy of putting you into the gutter.. When he caught you and asked if you raced I would of said of course and today is my easy day..

40mph average? Holy crap... I had trouble doing 12-14mph heading from the Huntington Beach pier to Sunset Beach last saturday afternoon... Then again, i'm weak, i had already ridden SART from Green River Road, and had been fighting a headwind the entire f***ing way...

Oh, i would have at least returned with a "Nice bike yourself..." and a thumbs up or something. :) But on the contrary, you may have not said anything to begin with since my bike isn't all that exotic.

I love dropping guys like that on my steel fixed gear. But hey you have ridden with me I don't like to talk to anyone either, especially if I'm climbing. I just want to ride my bike.

I think the OP was referring to his average speed over a 40 mile ride. If he is averaging 40mph it's either all a very steep downhill ride or he needs to be on a pro team winning every race. Oh, btw...I always say hello to fellow bikers.

gotta love a lil comp on the roadie heading to the beach. Some people think they are everything til someone comes along and puts them back into check.

You're one of those.;) :) I met one older gentleman at a light, and he would not let me go! He asked so many questions and told me his life story!:D He asked about everything, short of my address and social security number. I didnt want to be rude leaving him in middle of his conversation (yes, he carried the conversation all by himself),so I rode with him, but he was very entertaining and friendly, so I did not mind.

WHen a cycling tourist type encounters another cycling tourist type; I sense no such arrogrance. Instead, swaping cycling tales can almost delay the ride .

I've had people tell me all kinds of things.
lets see;
I had a guy pull up and ride with me, and in about 10 minutes he started telling me
all his marital difficulties. Their separating, the why's and all. 45 min later he splits with a
"have a great day". Had to laugh and think, damn, gotta be better than yours....

Oh, and the guy that just started chatting... I learned all about his bi-polar/hyperactivity disorder.
and how he's riding the bike because he "just decided" to stop the meds... ( OK, I'm 10 miles back
on a dirt road, starting to worry)...

and of course....

People will say all kinds of things to strangers. And some of us are stranger than others!:D

Yes, they will. I think there may be three camps. Those who just want to ride (and may or may not be ignoring others when silent - i.e. some do have tudes but others are just in their zone), those who will at least acknowledge other riders but keep on moving, and those who will gladly strike up a conversation while out riding. I've encountered all three but personally enjoy when a rider tells a little about him/her-self for a few moments on a ride. Depending on their story, it can be quite interesting, although I've yet to hear a marital strife story.

I'll always at least give a nod of recognition if someone comes up to me, but I can't stand it when they suck my wheel without as much as a grunt to let me know they're there.

But at least this guy acknowledged you in the end.

I think the motivation to 'beat someone' leads to an obsessive competitive spirit. For one to say, I crossed the great continental divide and saw the Atlantic three weeks later is more of a communial effort. One promotes a self centered pride where as the other usually a joint effort.

No...you see, HE thought we were racing...I was having a polite conversation about P.E., E.D., and TMI...and he just dropped off the back.
