Mountain Biking - How do I find out if my RockShox SID is at 63 or 80mm?

I emailed RockShox support and they told me the following:

Measure the length from headset race to dropout. At 80mm it's 451mm, 63 is 436.

Where is the headset race and where is the dropout?

Thanks, I measured it from the headset race to the end of the dropout and it measured exactly at 451 mm, so that means I got an 80mm fork.

I did try to measure the upper tube but it's 123mm and that didn't quite make sense.

I also tried using the travel indicator by pushing it as far as I can and could not get it to reach the full 80mm. I was more like 55mm.

Another question:

The fork is new and it's been sitting in my room for a month while my new frame is on order. When I depress on the fork, on rebound, it makes a springee sound like a spring would make when it's not lubricated.

Any ideas on what I can do?

I would probably work it a little.. I think it is along the same lines as letting a car sit for an extended period of time. You need to run it to move the oil around. Something like that...

I may be wrong.

RS need a little time to work in... also, many RS forks come from the factory in a 'unfinished' condition... meaning, not enough oil, missing seals etc etc... manufacturing errors... My Boxxer rides like butter after being taking apart and rebuilt. Give the fork some time.. then it should loosen up.

To measure the actual travel, strap a zip-tie to the stanction, you can see in the photo below how much travel I was using for that run. Then you just measure from the Lowers to the zip-tie and you have the travel!
