35 miles into a 42 mile ride I ran over a rock and blew a rear tire. I took the tire off and took out the tube, BIG ole rip.I ran my hand around the inside of the tire and it feels OK. I put in a new tube,wouldn't pump up. I take it out. Full of holes that something in my wedge pack gabbed into it. I patched 4 holes with these huge glueless patches that I had to rip apart into smaller pieces because I didn't have knife. I put it all back together and its holding air. Then I see a knot where the tube is sticking out a tear on the side of the tire. I remembered the old 'dollar bill trick' and shoved a bill in between the tube and tire. Limped home airing it up a couple times and swerving like a drunk around potholes. I keep my streak of riding back all my rides going! (Boy, now I done it) :p

That rocks. I dread my first flat, I really do. And watch, it'll be the rear tire. :rolleyes:

I'll remember that dollar bill trick. That's why I love the BF. Collective experience is a terrific resource.

Just get that first flat out of the way. The best way to do it is to set out on a ride with nothing to fix a flat: no pump, no patch kit, no spare tube, no tire levers. I've done that twice in the past year, and both times I've had a flat.

I have used nothing but glueless patches now for the last 6 years and I can tell you after using 2 to 5 per week-thats what I said-per week, I have found no problems with them whatsoever. In fact I have found them to be faster to put on then standard patches, and not have to find a dried out glue tube. Since I switched to Armadillo tire though I have not used a patch in 3 years. I am not sure if the glueless patches dry out or not so next week I will buy new ones to replace the 3 year old ones just to be safe; but for 3 bucks who cares?
