I'm sorry Gary but global warming it just to damn important to
ALL of us to not keep talking ,and working on, ways to stop or
reduce its impact on the earth.
The minute that people stop talking about an important issue
it sldes back to forgotten land. Global warming is to important
to allow that to happen.......even here at Bikeforums.net.

Sorry DG, I rose to the bait like a starving fish. Rhetoric trumps logic everytime no matter which side you take. I'll try to be good.
But you have to admit that the cow thing really got them warmed up...

I did not vote. The world almost entirely accepts it's validity. So do I. The debate is old. I won't even open such discussions. Seems pointless. I do not even like thinking it necessary to discuss such. Either we are suicidal or not. Don't care much for Florida anyway.

I'm bored with people who aren't willing to address what's obviously a grave problem. Does that count?

Velo Dog, I do agree it as a serious issue worthy of serious discussion. At the same time I think of the 50+ Forum as a sanctuary of sorts. For me, this is a place where we can support each other through the ups and downs of the cycling life and where we can support each other through the ups and downs of life in general.
That's why--in this venue--I stay out serious stuff anymore. Not saying you're wrong. Just stating my opinion and my perspective n the 50+ Forum.

Maybe they'd just like grave problems to be addressed in the proper forum. Who knows?

There have been dozens if not hundreds of threads in the 50+ forum, maybe a couple regarding "grave problems," that perhaps should have been placed in a more "proper forum." Some of those have created hundreds of posts. I say let the one on global warming run its course. Certainly as apropos as the 110+ posts on "where should I retire" or the over 400 posts on weight loss. Moreover, the discussion has been immensely more civil that what we see via-a-vis the global warming issue on TV or stuff written by the pundits on the issue. Maybe we can start a trend here. :D  Plus there is at least some tie in to cycling. Those of us who chose this as a form or recreation are either a) helping in a very small way to stem the problem or b) not hurting those who believe it is not a problem.

well in the ideal world, there would be infinite tasty cycling topics to discuss, twist thru every dimension and thereby arrive at some pleasant 'enlightenment' within the church of perpetual motion. In reality, after you've had umpteen renditions of anyhting, any new topic helps.
Lets face it, the vast majority of us don't really know any of the others here. Yes, a few actually ride or have ridden together at some point, but thats rare. Ultimately we have some great parlor conversations that also bring some new info (depending on if its new for you) to light. Usually in the ailments/conditions/crosses we must bear.
I don;t know about you, but I mostly feel 'connected' to people I have met in meat space. That some 20 or 30 something can actually feel 'connected' to something purely from a 1 & 0 internet connection, escapes me. Cocktail conversation is usually at its best when you can breeze the room and dabble into the conversation around the fireplace, the one out on the deck or the heated one in the kitchen. Once you start tawkin the same old stuff around the room, the Half-life has diminished rapidly and its time to 'sorry, got to get the babysitter home before ..."
Lets face it, there are a few elder statemen (women?) in any of the BF forums includind 50+, but the vast 'unwashed' (in which I count myself) are at best 3 seasons or younger. Anybody wanna guess why?
So throw us a freekin bone
If we can put up with Diegos adnauseum, despite moderatorial intervention, then global bar-bie doesn;t seem so off-topic.

I think you're saying I should relax and let the thread do it's thing. At least, I think that's what you're saying... :D
Ain't no big thang...but I'm still entitled to my two cents on it, just as the sadly unenlightened anti-Diegos gave us theirs!
And clearly I have no power here anyway (which is just as well), because as you can see the thread now resembles an Everready battery -- going and going and going!
So yes, I can live and let live. Peace, my brother.

I have been posting much less in the 50+.
I just can't seem to keep up with the unannounced contests and the P&R appropriate posts, and the cutesy "insider" posts any more.
Nothing wrong with them. And more power to the posters.
It just isn't my "cup of tea" right now.
Maybe I am just burned out on posting in general?
[EDIT]
As I just reviewed a listing of recent posts, there is still a lot of good stuff in between the chaff. So, it must be ME, not the forum!
Maybe I've said all I can say. Anything more is just a repeat. :D

Bottled water is a Scam and just because shoes are grey doesn't mean they're adequately soft.
I urgently request recommendations for a reputable/credible "carbon offset" retailer because the COLD weather is not affording bicycle riding (time or distance) suficient to avoid exceeding my unspecified/undefined carbon allotment/allowance.

Global Warming is Religion to the believers just as Global Cooling was. It's sort of funny that the same causes of Global Cooling now contribute to Global Warming.

Global Warming is Religion to the believers just as Global Cooling was. It's sort of funny that the same causes of Global Cooling now contribute to Global Warming.
I haven't seen the studies (nor do I have the knowledge to make sense of them if I did) but the part that confuses me is that global warming and cooling is always present... We have had several ice ages according to the scientists.
When a volcano erupts we hear about the fact that it is spewing more gasses than any other source known... and they seem to erupt every year (just not very many in populated areas).
I think the study is valid in direct proportion to the chance that it is flawed because I know the political pressures behind both sides...
What about the lateest study shows that it is man caused?
Who caused the global warming at the end of the last ice age? Were dinosaurs driving a lot of cars?
While I am all for ethical consumption of resources, I tend to react negatively to any knee jerk reractions in either direction.
Am I concerned that Polar Bears are endangered? Yes.
Were there species endangered or made extinct during the last warming cycle? Probably.
Will there be species endangered by the next cooling part of the cycle? Yes. Will we then have a mandate to keep the globe warm?
It's the circle of life. Things come to be, things cease to be. What specifically have we done to change that?
Isn't it arrogant to think that when you look at the vast expanses of empty land when you fly anywhere in the world that those little specks of occupied land are changing everything?
I belong to the school of thought that we should do our part to do what's right, but saving a creature that is near extinction if that extinction is not directly caused by man is going against the system. We need to be careful if the natural order is what we are trying to protect that we don't protect too much.
I know a wetlands area on the west coast... It is being returned to its natural state. It had been used for a commercial purpose many years ago. How is it being returned to its natural state? By controlling the flow of water in and out to specific levels, carefully bypassing any flooding or drying out... But wouldn't these floods and dry periods be part of what would form the natural wetlands habitat? Aren't we imposing on nature what we expect it to be, rather than just letting it be?
I am all for letting nature work, as the earth is resilient, but if we do, we should do it all the way, and not in some way where we control what we think it should be.
So now the question becomes, How many find the "How many find the global warming thread boring" thread boring?

Do polar bears belch and fart methane gas?? As much or less than cows??
Will this "global warming" crisis prevent the polar bears from moving to higher ground like they do now during a rapid spring thaw??

Hey, I happen to like polar bears... especially the ones in the coke commercials. However, I expect they wouldn't be impacted negatively by global warming. ;)
I think whats got everyone in a sour mood in boredom. There was high anxiety, interest when,(as a group),we were selecting, endorsing, and cooing over DG new ride.We were indeed a "band of brothers."Now we have hit the bottom of the barrel on subject matter eg.(global warming, best avatars, weather, water, corn crop harvest,Hanoi Jane),which divides us up like a bunch of political banchies.
Basicly until Gary rides the new %&@"! bike out of his gated community,or starts to buy something again we are at a low ebb.You appear to be the adopted host in the geezer forum DG,so give us subject matter and set things right.

This is a thread with a poll about whether the thread (without a poll) about global warming is boring. This is not the thread to debate global warming. This is the thread to debate whether the debate on global warming, you know, the one in another thread, is, indeed, boring. If we are to discuss off topic topics, can we at least agree to stay on topic regarding the aforementioned off topic topics?

We need another choice on your poll, Gary. I'm sitting back and enjoying it. I ran across many well thought out and well written articles with some EXCELLENT references concerning the issue from this website that you won't see or find in others where all you see is people fighting PRO or CON!
Seriously from the posts I truly think the quality of people on this thread is so much higher than others I just want to recognize that! There's a lot of thinking, responsible, open minded people here, many with obviously highly educated backgrounds. No yelling or screaming or name calling here, either! Kudus to you all!

You know folks, we can do without this type of language and insulting of individuals with disabilities.
As a parent of a child who has been labeled "retarded" I fight this kind of language and attitude daily. Why does it have to show up on a bicycle forum?

Regardless of individual feelings this link to the article posted by Tom or Madd (I can't remember who - I'm having an age related methane brain discharge!) should be required reading for anyone with a brain and who can read! Spot-on Denver. We need to hear this even when we use terms in a sense not intended.
True story as I sit here. I grew up in Small Town USA a while back and us pups learned all the wrong terms for the ethnic, racial, religious, and other human false-dichotomies. Most were pure slurs based on the the flawless proof derived from folks' never having met a Jew or Arab or Mexican or whatever. I won't burden you [or embarrass myself] to relate the details. Suffice it to say it caused me no small trouble when I got out into the real world with. . .like. . .folks other than Anglo-Germans in it. Mind, I love those folks back home and recognize it flows less from hate than from ignorance and insularity. [Delicious side-bar. One of our "communal grandmothers" was a [closet] German Jew but it wasn't until I got "out there" in the world that I found that I had learned a remarkable amount of Yiddish for a small town coyote! Cracks me up to this day. Came in right handy in Israel once, tho'.]
