Track Cycling - Rebuilding Zipp 303's for track usage???

I have some Zipp 303 clinchers that I don't use much on my road bike. I was thinking of rebuilding these with some track hubs and using them on my track bike. Is this a bad idea? Should I just sell the 303's and get some tubular track wheels?

Goodish idea. Clinchers aren't perfect for track, but the rims are great for track.

Thanks! I try to recycle as much cycling gear as possible. It's the best way to keep the wife off of me for spending too much money. I have been riding on the road for a while but just became addicted to track racing. I would love to have some Zipp 404 tubulars for the track but I don't see that happening. I just bought a new track frame to replace my KHS Flite 100 so getting some new wheels will probably have to wait.

Can anyone suggest a pretty good track hub for this Zipp 303 rebuild?

Dura Ace hubs are super nice, but if the budget is tight, go with a set of Formula hubs and upgrade the bearing with Phil Wood inserts for a few dollars more.

The budget is pretty tight right now. I will probably opt for the Formula hubs.

Pity to use Formulas with such expensive rims. Get the VISA card out and go Dura Ace - think about the resale value.

just to complicate your decision further, have you considered trying a surly fixxer (http://www.surlybikes.com/parts/fixxer_pop.html) to convert the current hub to fixed use? i'm just sayin'. it may not work with your existing hub though.

as for tires, look into the veloflex clinchers. super light and low rolling resistance. my friend raced with them last year and loved them. he said they felt a lot like his tufo tubulars. i've been using vredestein fortezza clinchers on the track with great success. i use them on the road too. i'm switching to tubular for this track season though.

also, www.businesscycles.com has some vitorria ultra speeds on special; the site says this about them: "VITTORIA ULTRA SPEED - 700 x20C with folding bead. Rated at 145 grams with black casing (220tpi) and tread (slick), these tires have extremely low rolling resistance. Two for $46.50."

Now that I have thought about this, I have decided against the Formula hubs. I have actually decided against converting the 303's to track wheels. I am going to sell them and put the money towards some tubular 404's or another comparable track wheelset. I have some Cane Creek Volos that I will use until I figure out which track wheels I will buy.
